OLD MAN STRIKES OFFICER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Nov. 19. A sensational incident occurred wlitn an assault was committed on Herbert Jones, chief relieving officer of the relief department of tho Hospital Board, at his office, which necessitated him getting medical attention and having to leave for his home through injuries he had received. A strong old man, who had been the cause of a lot of trouble to the assistants in. the office, was unusually persistent in his demands, and Mr. Jones told him to leave the office. Mr. Jones, who was wearing glasses, then turned to give attention to something else, when he was struck a violent blow in the eye, smashing the glass of the spectacle*, which severely cut the flesh. Mr. Jones was incapacitated from further work for the day. His assailant, it is alleged, then turned his attention to Mr. Newman, assistant inspector, but was soon controlled by a younger man, and was held until he was taken charge of by the police.

Mr. Jones was advised by a medical officer to-day that he would have to rest completely for a few days on account of his injuries and shock. Kenneth McLeod, aged 75, who cominittqd the assault on Mr. Jones was, in tho Magistrate's Court, sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment.
