Prior to the commencement of the first wool sale of the season this morning the brokers arose to pass a vote of condolence with the widow and family of the late Mr. Walter Hill. In moving the vote, Mr. Kettle, on behalf of the Hawke’s Bay woolbrokers, stated that brokers and buyers alike had lost a great man, one w*ho understood the trade from A to Z. Mr. Hill had been associated with the trade for years, and was mainly responsible for the Dominion’s enormous wool industry as it stood to-day. Mr. Kettle referred to the great services to the Government the late Mr. Hill had performed during the commandeer period. “The British Government itself owes a debt of gratitude to Mr. Hill,” he concluded. The resolution was passed, the benches of brokers and the spectators standing. At 10 a.m. the operations ceased for a few minutes to coincide with the time of the funeral of Mr. Hill.
