I--Fielding J.C. spring. RACES AT LEVIN. (By “Moturoa.”) Very satisfactory acceptances were received for the majority of events at Levin to-day, and everything pointed to a very successful meeting. Yesterday, however, the glass went down with a thud, and considerable rain fell. The tracks were in good order prior to the downpour, but the going is likely to be holding, and, if the rain continues, the attendance will be adversely affected. This will be hard luck for Secretary E. R. 'Bryant and the energetic officials (headed by the popular president, Mr. T. Bevan), all of whom lay themselves out to make the meeting a popular one, and whose hospitality is a feature of the annual gathering.

Racing commences with the Manakau Hurdles, 1% miles, in which moderately good jumpers like Matu, Axle and Gauntlet are engaged.

The Weraroa Hack Handicap, 7 furlongs, has attracted fourteen horses, of which several are engaged later in the day. Gardant likes the sting out of the ground, and has been racing well lately, and Bronstell, Pauart and Vertigern may also run well.

They are a very ordinary lot in the Maiden Race, 6 furlongs, the only ones with public form to recommend them being Kilmezzo, Some Lad and Humoresque.

Black Mint is giving away a lot of weight in the Mako Mako Hack Handicap, 6 furlongs, but has scored two firsts and four seconds this season in six starts, and appears to have earned every pound of 9st 71b. Starboard Light, with four firsts and a second in seven starts will also attract the attention’of followers of form. # * . ♦

The Levin Cup, 14 miles, has drawn a fine field of sixteen, and amongst the acceptors being good ones like Indian Sage, Diogenes, Hipo, Nukumai, Beaumont, Rouex and. Modern. Indian Sage is reported to have freshened up again, but may find Diogenes hard to beat at a difference of 31bs. Hipo finished second in Iris la.: start (at the Masterton meeting), and should be suited by the track at Levin. Nukumai is such a great all-rounder that he cannot be passed over lightly, and the heavier the going the 'better it would suit him. Of those lower- down, Modern ran a close third to Piuthair and Avola in her last start, the Pearce Handicap (one mile) at the Wellington meeting. To-day’s Cup race bears a very open appearance, but Diogenes, Indian Sage and Modern should all run the ten furlongs out to tho end. * * * - * Scratchings may reduce the dozen in the Lake Hack Handicap, one mile and a distance, but if reserved Bonhomme would have a lot of friends. Panart stays on well, and Our Jack also shapes like a stayer. This trio, by tho way, is engaged in earlier races, and their starting is problematical. * * # # Fourteen very fair sprinters remain in the McDonald Memorial Handicap, 7 furlongs, and of these Gold Box, First Acre, Epistle and Modern have all raced well recently. Gold Box and Epistle showing up promniently in better company than they are meeting to-day. * ‘ * * * ■ Racing concludes with the-Hokio Hack

Handicap, a five furlongs flutter, which should, give smart beginners like Argue, Starboard Light and Note a chance to feather their admirers.

Air. C. O’Connor will do the starting at the meeting, and Mr. J. Cameron will act as judge. • # * *

Bisogne (Bezonian-St. Evangeline) was numbered amongst the defunct this week, dropping dead at Hawera on Wednesday. Bred by Mr. G. P. Moore in 1912, lie was purchased by Mr. A. Alexander as a yearling, and in the next season started six times, finishing seeond to Loyal Arch in the Cambria Handicap, and third to the same horse and Housewife in the Rakina Handicap, both races being run at Takapuna.

As a three-year-old Bisogne had a great innings, winning the Borough Hack Handicap and the Electric Hack Handicap, at the Taranaki summer meeting; the Strathmore Hack Handicap at Stratford; the Farewell Handicap at the Auckland winter meeting; and tho Liverpool Handicap and Onslow Handicap at the Wellington winter meeting. That year he started fifteen times for six firsts, two seconds and two thirds, and won £B9O in slakes. # * • «

In 1910-17, tho chesnut again raced well, thirteen starts resulting in four firsts, three seconds and two thirds, his wins comprising tho Epsom Handicap at tho Auckland spring meeting; the Oroua Stakes at Feilding; and the Railway Handicap and Royal Stakes at the Auckland summer meeting. In the latter event he carried Ost 101 b, including 101 b penalty, and defeated Biplane 7st 81'b, Koesian Set 111 b, Hymestra Ost 121 b, and Estland Ost 51b. That year he was ninth on the winning horses’ list with £2225.

As a five-year-old he ran unplaced on four occasions, and was retired to the stud, where ho had a fairly successful career. Last season some 25 of his progeny were racing, amongst the number being Avola, Banjuke, Benzora, Bisax, Bonogne, Girriebillie, Glengariff, Ora’s Delight, Kenyon, Monaghan, Paitonu, Shut Eye, Troilus and Vaward, and all of these did well. Others of his stock to race with minor success were Atone, Bonona, Duetto, Insurance, Lisogne, Marble Zone, Oreades, Partaga, Rising Star and Vetogne. Bisogne was fourteenth on tho winning sires' list with 20 victories and £6840 in stakes last season. TURF TOPICS. The Ashhurst-Pohangina annua! meeting takes place on Wednesday. **• ' « The Takapuna spring meeting opens on Saturday next, and concludes on Monday. * *■ « * F. McKay and C. 11. Moss have moved their horses in training from Bulls to Feilding.

Featherston reports are to the effect that the Aussie-bred pair, Vertigcn. and Polonaise, have been galloping well, and are expected to show up in forthcoming engagements.

Mr. Otway Falkiner, owner, of The Banker, is reported to have paid 2000 guineas for Fool’s Paradise, which seems to be a tall price for the somewhat erratic son of Absurd. Fool’s Paradise was booked to leave for Mel-bourao this week.
