BILLY BOYS’ WORKSHOP.

MAKING A DOG KENNEL The d-cg kennel illustrated in Fig. 1 can be made from a packing case of suitable size. The exact size of the case will best be determined by the size of the dog, and if the kennel is for a puppy, you must allow plenty of space, because he will grow, you know! First remove the lid of the case, pull out any projecting nails, and make any rough places smooth with sandpaper. Then see that there are no holes or slits which would let in draught; nail pieces of thin wood over the slits on the inside of the box. This done, make use of the lid of the case by cutting it up for the pointed end pieces shown in Fig. 2. One piece must be shaped to form a triangular end for the box, and this is accomplished by sawing across the wood at a suitable

angle—4s degrees is the best. Make this piece wide enough to reach across the outside of the end of the box and nail the parts together as shown at the back in Fig. 2. At the front en<J nail one piece of wood at each side, after sloping the tops to correspond with the angle and height of the piece at the other end. After these are nailed in place, as shown in Fig. 2, saw away the end of the box proper, marked A in the diagram. Then cut a triangle of the wood and nail it to the inside across the top of the two front uprights; of course shape it to the same slope as the other end.

This part is shown in Fig. 3, and also the next stage in the work, which is that of fitting the roof. This is beet made with thin boards and should project in front to form a shelter for the door. Make one side of the roof first, and then the other, and cover the whole with a piece of tarred felt or an odd bit of linoleum, fixing it with thin battens at the front and back as shown in Fig. 1. Nail two stout pieces of wood underneath the box to raise it from the ground, paint the exterior and the kennel is complete.
