PENALTY FOR CRIME
CHRISTCHURCH SENTENCES. By Telegraph —Press Association. Christchurch, Nov. 18. William Francis Halliburton, a commission agent, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court to-day to charges of receiving various stuns, totalling £660 at Ashburton, and fraudulently omitting to account for them. Sentence was postponed, his counsel stating that the prisoner had made a muddle of things. Ernest Le Compte, for an indecent act, received three years in gaol. Roy Walter Watts, a postal officer, for theft of a postal packet, was admitted to probation for two years. Frederick Richardson James, for attempted rape, was sentenced to five years’ gaol, the judge stating tlmt th* prisoner was lucky to escape a flogging.
