The Tiiuaru byaneh of the A.S.R.S. unanimously approved the candidature of Mr. L. Mdlvride, of Napier, Jcr the position of general secretary.—Press Assn.
Mr. L. J. Berry, secretary of tho Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of New Zealand, arrived In New Plymouth last evening, and proceeds south this afternoon.
Mr. Nesbit D. Smith, of the New Plymouth branch of the Bank of New Zealand, leaves by the Rarawa to-night for Onehunga, en route to Suva to take up a position on the Fiji staff of the bank for a period of three years. A Press Association message statu that after 50 years of service in the Methodist Church, the Rev. Samuel Lawrey, of Christchurch, is retiring from the active ministry. He has a record of 34 years as Circuit Minister, and 16 yeaiw as Conuexional Secretary for New Zealand.
A London cable reports that the Engineer in Chief of the Public Works Department, Mr. F. VV. Furkett, left London on Wednesday for New Zealand. En route he will inspect some large public works in France, Egypt and Java. He will call at. Darwin and Thursday Island,
A very old resident of Tauinarunui, Mr. Thomas Herlihy, passed away at Dr. Douglas’ private hospital, Hamilton, on Sunday morning, November 7. The Ipte Mr, Herlihy eanie to New Zealand over 50 years ago from County Kerry, Ireland, and he had been a resident of Tauinarunui for nearly 20 years, during most of which time he was in the employ of the Public Works Department. Deceased was well-known throughout the district, and was popular among tho residents and his fellow-workman. He was 08 years of age, and the only remaining relative in the Dominion is Mr. David Herlihy, Senr., farmer of 1 aumarunui. The interment took place at Taumarunui on November 9.
