MONEY FOUND IN HOUSE
CASE OF AN OLD COUPLE.
HOSPITAL BOARD’S QUANDARY.
The Auckland Hospital Board is in a quandary as to what to do with a sum of £265 13s 2d in cash which has been found in a house rented for a number of years by two old people, aged 86 and 91 years, who have been admitted to the infirmary. The Pensions Department has ease eyee on the money, and has made a claim for the refund of £277 which it contends has been overpaid to the old couple. As there was a doubt as to who was the owner of the money, the board decided to hand it over to the Public Trustee to settle the question, but the Public Trustee has advised the board that he is doubtful as to whether he can accept it. ' When the subject came before the board, the chairman said the old people had no idea as to whom the money belonged. Their memories had failed them. It was probable that the money had been accumulating over a number of years. He thought that if the Public Trustee could not take care of the amount, the board should retain it in the meantime and let the Pensions Deparment take action to decide the question of ownership.
