DISTRICT NEWS.
BELL BLOCK. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual bazaar and sale of work conducted by the Ladies’ Guild of St. Luke’s Church, was held in the hall last week, when nearly £6O was raised. In the evening visitors spent an enjoyable time at cards and dancing, while a wireless outfit supplied music at intervals. The monthly meeting of the school committee was held in the school on Monday evening, Messrs. R. Parkin (chairman), R. Henry, F. Holmes, and W. Hoskin being present. The headmaster reported that the roll number was now 58 boys and 54 girls, total 112, three new pupils being recently enrolled. The attendance was just getting back to normal after the influenza epidemic when chicken pox appeared, causing a considerable falling off. Mention was made of repairs to the boloplicon and the purchase of a hectograph for school use. Several accounts were passed for payment, A general meeting was subsequently held to discuss ways and means of raising funds for the annual school picnic. The idea of a mart did not appeal to the ladies, so eventually it was decided to make a direct appeal to. the parents for donations, and a substantial amount was promised by those at the meeting. It was decided also to hold the championship events on December 17, when the two cups will be competed for. Races for the little ones will also be arranged and afternoon tea will be provided by the ladies of the district. The annual picnic will not take place until February next. Some idea of the amount of rain that has fallen here of late may be gauged from the fact that 10.47 inches were recorded for the month of October, while over 5 inches have been recorded in November up to the time of writing.
