DOMINION’S FINEST

SUCCESS OF ROYAL SHOW STRIKING DISPLAY OF CATTLE. ENTRIES CONSTITUTE RECORD. (By Wire —Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. The finest collection of dairy stock ever exhibited in New Zealand was penned at the Royal Show to-day. In point of numbers the entries exceeded those of any previous Royal Show in the Dominion, the total number being 476, comprising 166 Jerseys, 157 Friesian, 81 milking Shorthorns and 72 Ayrshires. Speaking at the luncheon at the show Mr. W. Perry, president of the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand, said the dairy cattle were not only the finest ever shown in New Zealand but it was possibly the best exhibit ever seen in the Southern Hemisphere. Jerseys predominated in the dairy classes. The judges of the Jerseys based their opinions on type and are not aware of any particular animal’s butter-fat record. For this reason Mr. W. T. William’s cow, “Holly Oak’s Annie,” whi h yielded 1056.49 pounds of butter-fat and 18,522.7 pounds of milk in 365 days, a Dominion record, was not placed. The champion cow, “Twylish Briar Flower,” owned by W. H. Carter, of Patumahoe, near Auckland, was regarded by the judge as a fine example of the breed. The Friesians were undoubtedly New Zealand’s choice of the breed. Some wonderful butter-fat producers attracted attention. Among these were two entered by the Hobson Farm, Ltd., of Wharepapa. One, “Lozo 11. of Ashlynn,” gave 905.89 pounds of fat and 23,274.7 pounds of milk in the lactation period,, while another, “Lady Lozo Alcarbia Van Racelands,” gave 832.59 pounds of fat and 23,158.6 pounds of milk in the season. The aged cow and dry cow classes were very fine, and the judge expressed himself as being delighted with the whole section. The provincial group-Friesian class was described by the judge as the finest lot of Friesian cattle he had ever seen at any show. Every animal, he added, was fit. to be a prize-winner. Auckland is marking the show with a carnival week, and a round of special entertainments is being provided for the visitors, who are here in large numbers.
