SUPREME COURT

TARANAKI SESSION. OPENING NEXT WEEK. The quarterly session of the Supreme Court in the Taranaki judicial district opens at New Plymouth next Tuesday, Before His Honour, the Chief Justice (Hon. C. P. Skerrett). The criminal business to be dealt with by the Court is. probably the heaviest on record, though the length of time during which the Court will be engaged upon criminal cases will depend largely on how many of the 14 prisoners will plead guilty. At present the position is that twelve criminal eases are set down for trial, and two prisoners will come up for sentence. Eight civil cases are set down for hearing before the Judge alone. Petitions in divorce total 11, only one of which is to be defended. There are two Compensation Court cases to be heard, two originating summonses, and two legal arguments in bankruptcy matters. INVERCARGILL SITTING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Invercargill, Nov. 16. The Supreme Court opened before Mr. Justice Sim. Only one criminal ease was on the list. Allan Bollinger, charged with escaping from the Borstal Institution, was ordered live years’ detention. HEAVY LIST AT CHRISTCHURCH. Christchurch, Nov. 16. An exceptionally heavy calendar was presented at the criminal session of the Supreme Court to-day. Twentythree persons were charged with offences. There was one charge of murder, one charge of manslaughter, two charges of causing death through negligently driving a motor vehicle, I several of house-breaking, and more charges connected with sexual matters than/ have come before the court for a long time. Mr. Justice Stringer said he regretted the length of the calendar and then dealt with the cases in detail.
