TARIKI. (From Our Own Correspondent ) The Tariki Tennis Club’s courts were officially opened for the season on Thursday, in the presence of an exceptionally large attendance, visitors being present from Stratford, Inglewood, Kaimata and Ratapiko. The weather, though not of the best imaginable for the purpose, ivas better perhaps than any other day of the week, and enjoyable play waa had. A plentiful and dainty afternoon tea was provided by the ladies and served in a marquee that had been erected for the occasion. At the last annual meeting of the chib, held a week or two ago, an entirely new committee was elected, consisting mostly of young people. 'The older ones, who have done good work in the past, realised that the time had come when the future success of the cluo depended chiefly on the amount of enthusiasm put into it by the younger set, and to this end gracefully retired from office, but at the same time expressing willingness and pleasure to give any assistance they could in an unofficial capacity to further the interests of the club. A strong committee, consisting of about fifteen members, was elected, from among whom Mr. Len. Loveridge was made president and Miss C., Glen lion, secretary and treasurer. It is expected that very much more interest will be taken in the game in Tariki this season than has been for the last year or two. In this connection a euchre party and dance was held in the hall the same evening, and this also was a decidedly successful and enjoyable venture on the part of the new committee, something over £l2 being taken at the door. The first prize for ladies at the card tables was won by Mrs. James senr., Surrey Road, the second prize going to Mrs. Butler. The men’s first prize (a suit case) was won by Mr. Alex. Thompson. While the elders and more staid were at euchre in the supper room the floor of the main hall was well covered with a merry party dancing to strains of music produced by Feefc’s orchestra. Slipper, again the work of the ladies, was handed round somewhere about midnight. On the same day the Tariki Bowling Chib made their first venture into the banner matches of the central division by sending two rinks to Kaponga, where they were successful in scoring a win. The teams were as follows (Kaponga mentioned first in each case): Williams, Tonkin, Davison, Payne (s) 19; V. 'Summers. Rumball, Newell, Glen (s) 20; Kinsman, Roberts, Bell, Hawkins (s) v. Kerr, Mail, Harrison, Therklesou (s) 25. There is still quite an ample supply of rain about. It is a long time since we had a day without a certain amount of it. Water and mud are about the cheapest commodity we know of just no w.
