MAYOR’S INELIGIBILITY

AUDIT OFFICE REPORT. RESIGNATION SUGGESTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. Arising out of the fact that Mr. G. J. Wallace, the Mayor of Timaru, did engineering work for the borough council nine months before he joined the council, the account for which £l9 was paid after he became Mayor and had sold his business, the Auditor-General has written sug gesting that he should refrain from exercising the function of Mayor or councillor till such time as he shall have been reelected, in w'hich case no further action on the part of the Audit Department would be necessary. A formal resignation would facilitate the adjustment of the position. At a special meeting of the borough council to-night, Mr. Wallace resigned, and the council adjourned till next Thursday night for the purpose of electing a Mayor.
