SHOOTING OF A MAORI
ALLEGATION OF JEALOUSY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, Nov. 12. Tn connection with the affray at Ruatorea it is alleged that there was jealousy between the two men over a woman. The allegation made against Kaiwai is that when Joyce was behind the stables and only a few paces away he pointed a gun at him and fired at point-blank range. At the first shot Joyce Hung himself to the ground and then, as his assailant was about to fire again, dodged behind some manuka scrub. Joyce then rushed his assailant, but, overcome by loss of blood, fell into the scrub and the other man went. away. It is also alleged that Kaiwai borrowed the gun a few hours before, stating that he wanted it for duck-shooting. The injured man was taken to the Te Pina hospital, and four pellets were removed from his bac?
