DISTRICT NEWS.
BURFORD ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A very pleasant social evening took place in the school on Saturday night for the purpose of prize-giving and the school break-up. Items were given by the children for the early part of the evening, these being well rendered, and greatly appreciated. Special prizes were awarded to Ruby Loveridge, for general neatness; Courtney Kyngdon, for highest marks in all subjects during the year; David Smith, for attendance, not having missed a half day during the year. Each pupil received a book. After the prize-giving, a very enjoyable supper was done full justice to. The remainder of the evening was spent in games, and last, but not least, to the great surprise of the children, a Christmas tree, which had been curtained off in a corner, was brought out. It was a treat to see the expression on some of the children’s faces as they walked round the tree and spied their names on toys, etc. This is worthy of special mention as the presents were donated by the teacher (Miss Collier). On behalf of the pupils, Master Jack Lynch thanked Miss Collier for the presents and the enjoyable evening, and called for three cheers, which were heartily given. In addition to the presents each child received a bag of sweets, these being made by Miss Collier at her own expense. The children all joined in singing “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” and the National Anthem brought to a close one of the most enjoyable evenings the children have ever spent. The ladies held a social evening some time back. Miss F. Higgins (ticket puncher), Mrs. Williams, M.C., and Miss Collier (musician) kept things moving merrily until the early hours of the morning.
The weather lately has been anything but favorable for preparing the soil for turnip swede crops, the majority of which are usually in before Christmas, but it will be a little later this year. A few crops of hay are cut, but rain so far has prevented it from being stacked.
The staff at the factory is kept very busy just now, as the supply is much above previous years. It is with regret we learn Mrs. J. Balson’s health is no better, the latest report being that she was in a critical condition.
As this will be the last report this year, I will ocnclude by wishing you and the staff a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. (The News’ staff gratefully acknowledges and reciprocates the good wfehea.—Ed )
