TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Good luck in the New Year! Stratford on Monday and Tuesday. Trots at. Alexandra Park (Auckland) to-day. Rouen will be “hard” in the Stratford Cup. Klnsem should get amongst the winners at Marton.

Fire Brigade will never set the Thames on fire!

San Franette should soon have her number hoisted.

Malingerer could carry the grandstand and beat the local hurdlers.

If Correspondent, is reserved for the Mahoe Welter on Monday look out! Both Royal Blood and Viyella returned handsome dividends at Ellerslie on Tuesday. Glentruin was awarded 9.2 in the Summer Cup and 9.13 In the Electric Handicap, but her owner did not relish such flattery. Handicapper McManemin considers Glentruin 81bs. superior to Rational over six furlongs. Very few will agree with him. 'Last season Scion won £1690 in stakes. In two months this season he has gathered In £39oo—not a bad return for GOOgns. Explorer finished fastj in fourth place on the opening day at Ellerslie, and on Thursday rolled home and paid the limit. Royal Blood’s Imin. 12 3-ssec. was a record for the Railway Handicap. King Lupin won in imin. 13 l-sseic,, and Silver Link in oneflfth longer.

Zouave showed good form at Awapuni. and should run well with 7.2 In the Wairarapa Cup. It is time Mr. Elgar’s luck changed. Refrigeration has had time to up since Feiiding, and looks like scoring at the Wairarapa meriting. Many Kittle has been doing great, work at Riccnrton, and will be unlucky if he does not earn a winning bracket shortly.

Happy Days (Merry Moment—Jeanne D'Arc) registered another second at Awapuni on Tuesday. The first time they put a horseman up the chestnut, will "take out.”

Martulla was turned out in great heart at Awapuni by J. Morris, and such a beautifully bred mare (being by Martian—-Tortulla) should be capable of anything.

Pantier was supported by his party on Tuesday and Wednesday, but failed badly. He leaves all his hest gallops on the track.

The Great Nortjiem Derby will be run at Ellerslie on Monday, and E'nthusiasm should be well supported. King’s Trumpeter may beat the others.

Old Sonnino was produced at Awapuni and looked like a half-draught. Ted Penman will be lucky if he wins anything better than a Bracelet with the big Signor gelding. Allmarimba, the wretchedly-named son of All Red and Marimba, can go very fast, and the first time he steps out in a maiden race punters can go nap.

Bonny Louisa, by Boniform—Lady Louisa, is another useful hack, and she will not be long In breaking her "duck.” Horsemanship ‘won the Trial Plate at Awapuni for Red Cherry (All Red—Chiwai). Con. Reed brought her through nicely at the home turn, while Allmarimba was outside four horses, and covered a heap of unnecessary ground.

Civility (Elysian—Civilisation) w<jn so easily at Awapuni that the Juvenile Handicap at Marton looks to be at her mercy. Benmure will be next best

Goldscene should be Improved by recent racing, and it would not surprisp imany if the bay gelding scored in the Hurdles at Marton on Monday.

Cleasanta is in very fine form nt present, and will he hard to beat in her New Year engagements. She met. with all the trouble possible at Awapuni. but simply flew in. Kuia. is now trained by Jim Coyle at Marton, and she never looked hotter than when being saddled up for the Grandstand Handicap at Awapuni. She was backed by her party, but was knocked all over the course, and lost some skin and hair in the scramble. Tha Manawaju Club would be well advised if they increased the distance of tlie many mile and 55 yard races tp eight and a half furlongs, thus giving horses a chance to find their feet before tackling the sharp bend going out of the straight. Cold Steel looked very sore Awapuni, and can have little chance while the tracks remain hard. Peneus is a good sort of a sprinter, but his chance went up with the barrier on Wednesday. Better luck next time. Valerie ran a nice race on the first day at Awapuni, and she appears to be capable of improvement.

The locally-owned sire Campfire was represented by four winners at the New Plymouth meeting, viz., Frizzier, Pouma, Youna and Cammy. Mountain Knight (Mountain Bell and Ren Nevis), Husbandman (Euchre and Roman) were represented by two each, 'and Lord Multifid (Thunderclap), Manlapoto (Maniania), Guianforte (Miss Beauforte), Nassau (Mixture), Black Dove (Malingerer), Bezonian (Rouen), Hallowmas (Halgina), and Sunny Lake (Sunny Jim) by one each.

W. Pine was the most successful trainer, leading In four winners (Frizzier. Mixture, Euchre and Roman). J. B. Butler led in two (Pouma and Yoma), while IT. W. Johnston (Malingerer), J. H. Campbell (Mountain Bell', A. M. Wright (Rouen), O. Cox (Halgina), J. Brown (Sunny Jim), H. L. Abbott (Thunderclap), R. Brough (Maniania), E. J. Murtagh (Miss Beauforte), F. Marsh (Cammy). and P. W. Really (Ben Nevis’ had one success each. The young Hawera apprentice, W. E. Pine, had a great innings at Now Plymouth, riding four winners on-the first day and another on the second, besides two seconds and a third. M. Conway, H. K. Alexander, N. K. MoDonell, each rode two winners, and R. Flower, N. Shore, C. Edwards, L. George, and K. Lambess one each.

The Sunny Lake gelding Sunny Jim has been sold, and is to he shipped to Australia early next month. The price is said to have been £12(10.
