ELTHAM SPORTS.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. ■ GOOD SPORT PROVIDED. The sports meeting held by the Eltham Cycle Racing and Athletic Club on Taumata Park yesterday proved a great success. The club and the competitors are to be complimented on the quality of the sport they provided, especially in the cycling and running events. The weather was perfect and after careful preparation the ground was in good order. The five mile cycling event was won by A. Coleman, from scratch, after a most interesting race, and all the other cycling events were of an interesting nature. A feature of the sports was the very satisfactory entries in all events, .probably as a result of the liberal prize money offered and the reputation of the gathering. Careful attention had been given to all t’ ; e details that make for smooth running. Luncheon and afternoon tea were provided by the Sports queen committee, and soft drinks, ices and sweets were supplied on the grounds. The Eltham Brass Band rendered an excellent programme of music. The judges were Messrs. A. Hansen and C. Cooper and the starter Mr. A. W. Whiting. All the officials rendered good service. Following are the results:— CYCLING EVENTS. Half-mile cycle handicap.—First heat: H. Hoffman (45yds) 1, A. Coleman (scr) 2, J. Cross (20yds) 3. Ako started: G. Collingwood (10yds). H. Moles (40yds), C. Horsup, J. McNab and J. Allen (45yds). Allen led for the greater part of the journey, but Bint came strongly in the straight and won by a wheel. Time: smin. 38|sec. Three miles cycle handicap.—-J. Cross (70yds) 1, W. F. Cross came strongly in the straight and won by a length. A good race. Time: Bmin. 43sec.

Five mile cycle handicap.—A. Coleman (scr) 1, j. Cross (90yds) 2, H. S. Herbert 3. Also started: AV. F. Roebuck (scr), . G. Collingwood (70 yds), R. AVheeler (110yds), J. McNab. J. Allen (375yds). The field was soon reduced to five, who fought out a great finish. Allen led until the last round when the others closed up. Cross was leading into the straight, when Coleman came with a beautifully judged run and won by two lengths from Cross. AVheeler was beaten by Herbert for third place by inches. Time: 14min. 25aec. Time: 54sec. Boys’ school championship. 440 yards. —Coleman 1, AVilson 2, Cullen 3. Time: 70sec. Girls’ school championship, 75 yards. —E. Riley 1, N. Manley 2, D. O’Neill 3. Time: lO.jec. Girls’ relay, 440 yards.—AA 7 on by Eltham School (A. O’Neill. J. Presland, M. Walsh, D. O’Neill). The leading team dropped the stick and was disqualified. The young people were kept busy with a number of foot races. .SUCCESS OF NEW PLYMOUTH CYCLISTS. New Plymouth cyclists had great success at the meeting, winning the majority of the events. Of the fifteen places in the five events no less than i ven were filled by New Plymouth mon. H. Hoffman was first in the half mile and mile and third in the two miles. Bint was first in the two miles and ; second in the half mile. Cross was I first in the three miles, second in the five miles and third in the mile. Collingwood was second in the mile. Roehufik Wjis second in the three miles.
