Mr. Bret Clark, of the Kaikoura Star, is on holiday in New Plymouth. Mr. L. T. Watkins, of Wellington, is visiting New Plymouth. Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M., leaves to-day for the Wairarapa on a short holiday trip. Mr. D. Hutchen left New Plymouth on Wednesday en route to Sydney, where he will spend a few weeks’ holiday. A London message says that Mr. Arthur Henderson, the Labor leader, will contest East Newcastle, which is vacant through the death of Mr. Bell.
On Saturday last the proficiency pupils presented Mr. Jackson, of the Tawhiti School, near Hawera, with an illuminated address in appreciation of the services he had rendered the students during the year. Mr. T. W. Brown, of the Department of Agriculture’s Central Development Farm, Weraroa, has been transferred to the head office of the department in Wellington. Mr. S. P. Day, Government auditor at Hawera, has been appointed Gbvernment audit inspector at Napier. Mr. Day, who has been a resident of Hawera for two and a half years, will be leaving that town early in January.
The death of Mr. George Samuel Sale, formerly Professor of Classics at Otago University, is reported from London. Professor Sale, who was 91 years of age, came to New Zealand in 1860 on account of ill health and, after acting as editor of the Christchurch Press, provincial treasurer of Canterbury, and as agent in charge of the West Coast goldfields, became classical professor in the Otago University in 1870. He held this post till 1897.
