A ’PUBLIC-SPIRITED GIFT. New Plymouth is not noted for its benefactions. In this respect it is

poorer off than most towns, so that the recent gift by Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Burgess of a children’s playing area in Wallace Place is all tlie more gratifying and noteworthy. Whilst the gift itself is a most generous one, it is the kindly, considerate spirit behind it that matters more. Both Mr. and Mrs. Burgess have for years shown a public spirit and generosity entirely commendable, and placed the citizens under a deep

debt to them. Their unselfish, and devoted services during the strenuous years of the war will never be forgotten by the present generation, who now have another evidence of their attachment to the town and their regard for the welfare of the citizens of the future. Whilst New Plymouth is the fortunate possessor of many “breathing spaces,” thanks to the prevision of its founders, playing areas for children have not been provided. It would be good to have such spaces all over the town, and it is to be hoped that the example set by Mr. and Mrs. Burgess will be followed by others in a position to do so. That the action of these benefactors in providing this playing area for children is greatly appreciated goes without saying, and there is lit'tle doubt it will be such a success as will justify them in handing it over to the town. We join with the rest of the community in proffering thanks for this further evidence of their public spirit and generosity.
