T.J.C. CHRISTMAS MEETING. SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY, •ROUEN WINS THE CHRISTMAS HANDICAP. The weather for the opening day of the Taranaki Jockey Club's Christmas meeting yesterday was fine, hut dull during the greater part of the day, and drizzling rain fell towards the conclusion of the day’s sport. This, however, did not interfere with the attendance, there 'being a very large gathering, including visitors from all parts of the province. The day proved a very enjoyable one, racing being of an interesting character, though in some cases the fields were not very large. Finishes on the whole were close and, taken right through, the public had a good day, four first favorites justifying public confidence. The big race of the day, the Christmas Handicap, saw the favorite Rouen win nicely in a field of five, making the third* success at a meeting for the Hawera apprentice W. E. Pine, who came out with flying colors on the day, piloting four -winners. The open six furlongs went to the Hawera owned Sunny Jim. The starting, which was in the hands of 'Mr. A. Vincent, was on the whole good, whilst Mr. J. Cameron in the judge's box hoisted the winners’ numbers promptly.
The totalisator staff, under the control of Mr L. Rea, got through their work well, the machine handling £23,574, as compared with £31,354 for the same day last year, a decrease of £7780. Mr. Gordon, the stipendiary steward, was present and found it necessary to hold a couple of inquiries. W. E. Pine, the rider of Frizzier, was cautioned for alleged crossing of Sunny Vale in the opening race, whilst in the Borough Juvenile Hack Handicap S. Anderson, the rider of Kilcoo, was fined the amount of his riding fees for careless riding. Mr. J. Blewman, the club’s custodian, had the course and its appointments in splendid order, a feature being the borders and patches of vari-colored flowers dotted about the lawn. The catering, in the hands of the Hygienic Bakery, was of a high standard, whilst Mr. E. Whittle again had charge of the publican’s booth. The 4th Battalion Wellington Regiment (Taranaki Rifles) Band, under the baton of Lieut. R. L. Lowe, provided a. programme of music that was much appreciated, the items being frequently applauded. Mr. E. P. Webster, the club’s secretary, again ha<l his arrangements complete, being assisted by a capable and courteous staff. Detailed results:—

him busy. Sunny Jim, if reserved for this event, should also run well.
Nine also remain in the open six furlongs. Sunny Jim has gone up 13 lb for yesterday’s win and Pouma has also gone up (j lb. Big Push and Crossfire should show up prominently. Ten remain in the hurdles, yesterday’s dividend payers not having accepted. Sayoury should improve on yesterday’s run and probably Mimiwhangata and Dead Sweet will ako show up. The going was fairly good at Ellerslie, notwithstanding the recent rains. Proceedings opened with the Shortland Plate, In which twelve faced the barrier. Para received most support, the next in order being Ruapapa, Danger Zone, Far North and Sheffield. The story of the race Is soon told. Viyella was first away and never gave anything else a winning chance. Para made an effort on entering the straight, but could not make any impression on the winner. Danger Zone came with a fine late run from a long
way back and finished fourth. The winner's form was impressive. Of the eight starters fnr the Foal Stakes Bathos was a good favorite. Queen March, Tukia and Mnrlhaupo following in that order. Razzlo Dazzle, an outsider, and Tukia iuimned away first and led throughout. Razzle Dazzle' being the only one to give trouble, hut. the winner was doing Its best at the finish. Murihnupo ran a fair race, hut none nf the others imnrossed. Wild Hind and Top Score finished fifth and sixth.
Eighteen nnraded fnr the Robinson Handicap. Wheatfield meeting most •support, while Santiago. Florent and Bright Day were also well hacked. Potoanui began very fast and carried the field along to the straight entrance. Bright Day then took charge and looked like scoring without trou* *c. Santiago camo through on the rails from the distance with a late challenge,, but 'Bright Day stalled him off to claim a neck victory. The winner, who is a good tvpo of colt by Day Comet, should win again before long.
A fine field of 17 lined up for the Cup, all the contestants giving evidence nf thorough prenarntion. Insurrection was the first choice of the nublio, the others hoing backed as follows:—Winning Hit. Scion—Reyn! Box bracket. Income, Muraahl. Equitable. Bonmerday. and Royal Star. Several others wore fairly well fancied. Quick changes in the leading division marked the first furlong of the race, but when they settled down Winning Hit was in front, attended by Boomerday, Forest Gold, and Royal Star. There was little alteration in the positions till racing down the back stretch, where Royal Box soon ran into a good position. Rounding for the home turn Winning Hit was still howling along In front. Insurrection and Income haring tmoved un within striking distance. Tn the st.ra.tgnt Winning Hit and Boomerday compounded, ’caving Insurrection. Income and Scion to fight the battle royal. Tn the last 50 yards Scion got up on the rails to score a narrow victory, the three placed horses being very close together. Muraahl, br a late run, got fourth. The sectional times for the Cup were: One furlong 14 2-ssec., two fjirlongs 26 l-ssec., three furlongs 39sec.. four furlongs 51sec., seven furlongs Imin. 29 2-ssec., one mile Imin. 42 2-ssee., a mile and a quarter 2min. 10sec., a mile and a half 2min. 35 l-ssec., and the Inst half-mile in 50 4-ssec. No Bother was bast flu&nortcd fat
ton Hurdles, Passin' Through. Explorer, Battle Song (bracketed), Maud Wilson, and Snake being backed as mentioned. Maud Wilson went out fro<n) the barrier and set a fast pace, getting a good break on in the first mile. Snake challenged the leader at the back of the course, but could make no Impression. He came again in the straight, but Maud Wilson outjumped him and maintained the lead. Silverton came along with a late run and got second, but had no chance with the winner. Explorer was fourth, Passin’ Through being one of the last to finish. The Railway Handicap attracted a field of 19, Glentruln being favorite, while The Hawk, Epitaph, Pavo and Highland all got solid support. The Hawk led for the first furlong, r-when Royal Blood rushed to the front, followed by Lady Ridicule. Entering the straight Royal Blood seemed to have the field well beaten, but Glentruln came through in the straight with a stiff challenge. A good finish saw Royal Blood score by a narrow margin. Glentruln was rather badly placed in the early stages, or should have won. The Hawk gave a fair display and finished fourth.
For the Nursery Handicap Laughing Stock was backed as if the race was all over, but fair support, was accorded Deluge, Avonlea, and Murla. After a furlong had been traversed Ransack drew out and went on to win very easily. A good battle for second place saw Avonlea stall off a challenge by Laughing Stock. White Comet finished fourth. Pompey and Archibald got left at the barrier and lost much ground.
The concluding event (Christonaa Handicap) brought out fifteen runners. Enthusiasm was the popular favorite, but there was good speculation on Maioha, Mountain Lion, bracketed with Refinement, Tama-a-roa, and Lucius, who was well supported. Lucius lei? the field tc the straight, where the contestants were bunched, Enthusiasm, Tama-a-roa and Refinement being prominent. An Interesting finish saw Enthusiasm draw out in the last fifty yards to win nicely. Lucius battled on for third place, Refinement being fourth.
