TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Once again this scribe heartily reciprocates the many good wishes for the festive season tendered by brother sports in Taranaki and elsewhere, and hopes that all will have “a good spin” at the holiday meetings. It is fifteen years since the writer took up the role of “Moturoa” in these columns, and he hopes i that readers of the News have had the saitne | pleasure in reading the spasmodic pars which J have appeared in the sporting columns as he ■ has enjoyed in penning them. Sporting writi ing gets on one’s nerves occasionally but it lias its recompenses. Compliments are not expected, but criticism and (occasional) abuse make the task worth while. “Moturoa” feels that the time is now ripe—now that t’te time of peace and goodwill is at hand—to forgive the enthusiasm of the weiklers of the blue pencil; the tantalising blunders of the lino, operator: and the imany little annoyances which, at times, cause one to tear one’s hair, and say things which parson said we "didn’t orter!” Good luck, brother sports! racing at Auckland, New Plymouth, Palmerston North. Waipukurau, Kaikoura, Hokitika, Dunedin, and Alexandra, as well as trots at Gore, Ashburton, and Westport, so the sporting' fans of the Dominion will be well catered for. On Wednesday there will he racing at New Plymouth, Palmerston, Hokitika, and Dunedin, while our trotting friends will carry on the good work at Auckland and Westport. On Thursday there will be gallops at Auckland, and on Friday and Saturday trots in the same city. In all, fourteen clubs will hoist their flags, and the number of race days will number twenty-two.

The Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting, on Tuesday and Wednesday next, promises excellent sport. A good class of horses is engaged, and the fields should be good all round. Rouen appears to be a cut above the distance nerfoivners, but Complex and will not want for backers. Amongst the sprinters Inah, Hipo, and Pouma stand out, and they should get amongst the money at the meeting. Malingerer, a. really good horse over sticks, should be dangerous in hurdle races, and Kareao and the Aucklander Mimiwhanguta will also make things Interesting. Hacks are classey and numerous, and ones likely to carry big money in their engagements are Snatcher, Fife and Drum, Frizzier, Lochson and Halgina. The Auckland summer meeting will see big fields and fine racing on Tuesday and Tnuraday next. The Cup looks very open, but Scion (coupled with Royal Box) should command support. Principal opposition is expected from Insurrection and Foo Chow. Now that Glentruin Is ‘definitely announced as a. starter in the Railway Handicap, she is likely to be made a hot order. Epitaph and The Hawk will make her go fast, but. from all accounts the imported mare Is another A-rowsmith over “six.” Queen March, Murihaupo and Tukia look like running best in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, and Enthusiasm should go well in the Derby. Others that may show - up In the minor events are Danger Zone, Para, Vindictive. Explorer, Tarleton and Mustard Pot.

The Manawatu Cup will come up for decision on Boxing Day, and should provide a pretty race between Marqueteur, Merry Day and Admiral Codrlngton. Ambitious is fancied for the open sprint, but Chimera and Passionless should not be overlooked. On recent fonm Black Art, Atapo, Civility, Waipatu and Cleasanta should give a good account of themselves in minor events at the gathering. In recent years light-weights have taken a big hand in the concluding stages of the Auckland Cup, and tlie last two winners came from the Gst. 111 b. division. In hunting around for a good light-weight in this year’s Cup one Is attracted by Boomerday, whose recent form has been very good. Muraahi must have a rough chance, but it is doubtful if the Taranaki horse is as fit as he wjs at Riocarton in November. But tills year’s handicaps are framed on a low scale, and it is hard to pass Scion, who has only gone up Gibs, for winning the New Zealand Cup. Foo Chow, who was second, has a pound less at Auckland; Muraahi 11b. less; Royal Star Tibs, less; and Royal Box Jib. less. On paper it looks like Scion equalling the double victories (N.Z. and Auckland Cups) of Lochlel, St. Hippo, and Warstep. STRATFORD RACING CLUB. A meeting of stewards of the Stratford Racing Club was held on Wednesday evening. The possibility of bad weather causing postponement of races was discussed, and It was resolved that in the event of adverse or doubtful weather conditions the stewards meet at the secretary’s office (Egmont Chambers, Board Roam) at 9 a.m. on either day. Messrs. D. J. Malone, A. Stewart, H. M. Good and •J. B. Richards were appointed members of the judicial committee with power to add to their number.

Attention was drawn io the fact that last year inconvenience to patrons was caused through smoking on the part of some men, and it was considered advisable to have a steward in charge of the grandstand, Mr. J. W. McMillan being appointed with a paid Official.
