Orders for papers may also be left with him. CHRISTMAS CHEER. December 22. The children of Stratford whose parents belong to the Druids and Oddfellows Lodges, are always well remembered at the Christmas season and a special fund is provided to give them Christmas cheer. Last night there was a very large gathering of children and parents in the Town Hall, where the Druids held a Christmas tree function. The huge tree was liberally hung with presents of every description and with its vari-colored lights it was a delight to the juvenile eye. Father Christmas was given an enthusiastic reception and after he had distributed the presents' the children were entertained at supper. The Oddfellows entertained their young folk in the Parish Hall. The stage was occupied by a beautifully lighted and furnished holly tree, and the children’s pleasure was unbounded when the presents were distributed and supper was provided. Mr. A. J. Ching, clerk of the court at Hawera. and late secretary to St. Andrew’s Board of Management at Stratford, has been presented with an inscribed volume bv the Board of Management in recognition of his services. GENERAL. On the eve of leaving Stratford for Dunedin. Mr. L. F. Baird, who has been on the Stratford staff of Messrs. Tlalliwell, Spratt and Thomson for the past two years was the recipient of a gift from the staff as a tangible expression of the esteem in which he was held by them all. Mr. Kav in making the presentation on behalf of the staff, wished Mr. Baird every success and prosperity. The recipient suitably replied. Mr. Baird left by this morning’s mail train. Mr. Robert Guppy, of Stanley Road, died on Tuesday after a long and trying illness, patiently home, at the age of 60 years. The deceased, who was born in Auckland, came to this district about 15 years ago. and during that time. he with his wife and family, had devoted much time to the advancement of the district. The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church, and was of a quiet, consistent character. The late Mr. Guppv ->s survived bv his widow, two sons—Robert (Tauranga). and Arthur (Whnrehuia) —and five daughters—Annie. Ella. Bella, Ellen and Alice, for whom much sympathy is expressed. Ono son. George, a student at •he Wellington University, died about 12 months ago. The interment took place this afternoon.
