PREMIER AND JOURNALIST.

ACTION IN AUSTRALIA. Ry Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Dec. 22, 9.45 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 22. Mr. Justice Adams refused the application on behalf of Mr. VC. M. Hughes calling on Claude Delalande. journalist, to show cause why a criminal prosecution should not be commenced against him in connection with the publication of an article in the Sydney Daily Mail.

The judge severely commented upon the length to which a newspaper might go in its criticism of public men, and said he thought the proper course for Mr. Hughes to adopt was to proceed against the Daily Mail civilly.

The article of which Mr. Hughes complains dealt with the alleged settlement of Japanese on the north coast of Australia, in which Mr. Hughes was alleged to have taken a leading part.
