THE POULTRY MARKET. Messrs. L. A. Nolan and Co. report: Hens 2s 4d to 3s 6d, cockerels 2s to 3s 3d, chicks 3d to Bd, ducks 2s 4d to 4s Id, ducklings (small) 9d to Is 6d, geese 5s 6d to 8s 6d, turkeys 21s to 28s. Messrs. Webster Bros, report: Hens 2s to 3s fid, cockerels 3s fid, ducks 3s to 4s 6d, chickens (small) 8d to Is, turkeys 15s. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Melbourne, Dec. 22. Average quantities of hides were offered. All showing substance and weight were firm at previous irates. Other sorts were unchanged, except kips, which declined Barley.—English 4s 4d to 4s sd; Cape 2s 9d to 2s lid. Oats, 2s 7d to 2s 7%d. Potatoes, £8 15s to £lO. Onions, £9 to £9 10s. THE PIG MARKET. Few pigs were penned at Newton King, Ltd.’s haymarket yesterday. Weaners made from 12s, 15s to 16s, and slips 18s to 23s 6d. BURNSIDE STOCK SALE. SUITABLE CHRISTMAS LINES OFFERED. Dunedin, Dec. 20. On account of the approach of the holidays there was a double sale at Burnside to-day, butchers and others having to secure supplies to keep them going for two weeks. The entry, in all departments, was large and included several pens of choice quality, most suitable for the Christmas market. Fat Cattle.—A yarding of 2fifi head, which was not more than trade requirements necessitated, consequently the market opened at about last week’s rates under fairly spirited competition, but fell away as the sale proceeded and finished with prices fully 10s per head below those ruling last week. Prime heavyweight bullocks made up to 2Gs to 27s 6d per 100 lb, medium and handy weights 27s 6d to 28s, light and inferior quality 255, prime heifer beef 20s to 225, light and Inferior 18s to 20s, and cow beef 16s to 18s per 100 lb. Fat Sheep.—The entry totalled 2388 and included a few woolly sheep. The sale opened with prices about 2s per head below last week’s rates, but values hardened as the auction progressed and finished up about Is per head below last week’s values. Prime heavy shorn wethers brought from 5d to 5%d per pound, medium 5%d. a few woolly wethers fid, prime heavy ewes 4d to 4V a d. and aged and light ewes 4<l. Extra, prim ’ heavyweight shorn wethers realised from 40s m 455, prime 34s 9d to 395, medium 28s 9d tn 335, extra prime shorn ewes from 33s 3d to 30s. prime 29s fid to 80s, lighter sorts from 23s 6d upwards. Prime woolly wethers realised from 42s 9d to 45s fid, medium 37s 9d to 40s, lighter sorts from 32s fid upwards. Prime shorn ewes realised from 31s 3d to 365, medium 23s 6d to 30s.
Fat Lambs—-There was a large yarding, numbering 1724 head, compared with 195 last week, and included several pens of choice nuality, most suitable for the Christmas trade. The sale opened at prices about on a par with last week’s rates and gradually firmed, butchers paying about 2s per head more for their sunnlles at the outset. Values, however. eased towards the close of the sale, both butchers and freezing buyers (two of the latter operating) quoting last week’s values. Prices would have been considerably higher at the start but for the fact that many butchers had secured supplies outside the market. Prime iamb realised to-day from 9d to 9%d per lb and the prices are about £1 per head higher than those realised at the corresponding sale this time last yenr. Extra prime sorts realised from 34s tn 39s fid. nrlime 39s to 335. medium un to 27s fid. lighter sorts from 23s fid upwards.
Store Cattle.—A full yarding was offered and with the exception of about three pens of three-vear-old bullocks the entry was of very good quality. One pen of the bullocks mentioned realised from £3 to £5 5s per head, and tbe other two pens up to £5 13s per head. There was very little demand for young cattle and half were fat cows. Several sales were effected at very cheap rates. Dairy Cattle.—About forty head of dairy cattle were offered, the entry including several pens of cows in splendid condition. Best cows realised up tn £lO 10s per head. Pigs.—A medium yarding, consisting principally of porkers, was offered, competition was fairly keen and prices were about on a par with last week’s rates. Best baconers realised from 5%d to fid and best porkers up to 6d per lb. ADDINGTON MARKET. HEAVY YARDING AND GOOD SALE. Christchurch. Dec. 20. The Addington market, to-day, was a double market in view of the holidays. There were very heavy yardings and a good sale throughout. Store Sheep.—An increased entry and a keen sale throughout, all classes selling at an advance, rane lambs particularly. Forward 4 and 6-tonth wethers imade from 25« 3d to l 20s Rd, 4 and fi-tooth wethers 21s to 245, 4. 6 and 8-tOOth wethers 21s 6d to 24s 9d, 2-tooth halfbred wethers 19s Id to 19s fid, rape lambs 22s 9d to 245, small lambs 16s, cull lambs ss, sound and failing-mouthed woolly ewes and lambs 22s to 23s Id (all counted), aged forward ewes Ifis to Ifis fid, forward 4 and fi-tooth ewes 28s sd, 4-year crossbred ewes
Fat Lambs.—sooo penned, of which butchers secured about 3000, and exporters 1700. Values were lOd per lb, butchers paying up to 10%d in some cases. There was a keen sale. Extra prime lambs made from 34s fid to 375, a few special 30s fid, prime lambs 30s fid to 345, medium 27s fid to 30s, light and unfinished 24s 6d to 275.
Fat. Sheep.—An average yarding and a slightly better sale than’ last week. Wether mutton realised 6%d to G%d per lb, and ewe 5d to 5%d. Extra prime wethers made from 35s fid to 38s, special 41s, prime wethers 31s 6d to 34s fid, medium 29s tn 31s, light 2fis to 28s 3d, extra prime ewes 34s Cd, prime 28s to 325, medium 26s to 27s 9d, light 23s fid to 25s 6d. Fat Cattle. —450 yarded of moderate quality. The sale opened easier, hut firmed up, and was generally a shade better than last week. Prime medium weight sold from 29s to 31s per 100 lb, heavy beef 26s to 28s, tmedium 24s 6d to 265, cow beef 21s to 235, and rough beef 15s. Extra prime steel’s made from £l3 to £l4 15s, prime £lO 5s to £l2 15s. medium £8 to £lO, light and unfinished £6 to £7 10s, extra prime heifers £lO 7s 6d, prime £6 15s to £8 12s 6d, ordinary £4 5s to £6 10s, prime cows £6 to £8 15s, ordinary £4 5s to £5 15s.
Vealers. —An over yarding and a very poor demand. Good runners realised £3 17s, ordinary £2 5s to £3 2s 6d, small calves 4s upwards. Store Cattle.—A small entry and a fair demand. Three-year-old steers made from £4 to £4 15s, 2-year-old £2 to £2 ss, yearling 15s to 22s 6d. 2year-old heifers £2 15s to £3. yearling 18s 6d to 265, cows 20s to 265. x Dairy Cattle.—A small entry and a fair demand. Good second, third, and fourth calving springers made from £4 4s to £7 15s, inferior springers £2 to £4, springing heifers £2 10s to £6.
Fat Pigs.—A good yarding and a fluctuating demand. Choppers sold from £2 to £3 10s. light baconers £2 1.3 s to £2 17s, heavy £3 to £3 10s (average price per lb, heavy 5d to 5%d, light 5%d), light porkers £1 15s to £2, heavy £2 2s to £2 10s (average price per lb 6d to 9d). Store Pigs.—A good demand at the start, but it fell away. Small weaners made from 12s to 18s, good 225, small stores 18s to 245, medium 25s to 30s, best stores 425, sows in pig £2 10s.
