WAIT AND SEE.
FUTURE OF GOVERNMENT. WILFORD READY TO TAKE OVER By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch- Last Night. “You know as much here as they do in Wellington as to what is likely to happen in the political world,” the Hon. E. P. Lee said in reply to a reporter’s question to-day. Mr. Lee added that his pereonal opinion was that there were not man}’ members anxious for a new election, and he thought it likely some means would be devised to render unnecessary another appeal to the country before the expiry of the three years for which the members were elected. Mr. Lee’s suggestion was that some members would find that their political views were somewhat elastic and capable of adaptation to circumstances, and that would remove the danger of a new election next year. It was mentioned in Labor circles in Christchurch to-day that Mr. Wilford ban already drafted a list of Ministers in the event of Mr. Massey finding, when Parlia ment assembles, that he cannot carry on and Mr. Wilford is called upon to attempt to take up the reins of Government. A statement that has been in circulation in Christchurch for some days, that it is likely the Hon. W. Downie Stewart will be a candidate for the Speakership, is understood to be without any foundation in fact. THE WAITOMO SEAT. MAGISTERIAL RECOUNT Te Kuiti, Last Night. The magisterial recount of the votes polled in the Waitomo contest commenced this morning.
