DISTRICT NEWS.
NEWALL ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) We have to again congratulate the Newall Road school committee and teachers upon another very successful function at the barn on the 15th inst. The school concert was undoubtedly one of the best heard on the coast this year, and the headteacher (Mre. Fraser Jones) and her assistant (Miss V. Schieb) are to be complimented upon the splendid manner in which the children were trained. This must have been a very arduous task, as, with the exception of about three, the children were all very small. As usual with these Newall Road affairs, no stone was left unturned to secure success. Favored with a fine night their efforts were rewarded by a bumper house, about 150 turning up, not forgetting to mention that most of them were forced to travel upon one of the worst roads in the district, in several places the metal being worn through and traps nearly dropped through to the axles. The hall presented a mass of color, this being produced by various colored electric lights, nikau end punga ferns, making a splendid finish. The stage was also decorated with colored electric bulbs, which were switched on at various times during the performance. The programme, in charge of Mr. O’Callaghan, wae as follows: Pianoforte duet, Irene Goodwin and Girlie Smith; “God, Bless New Zealand.” chorus; recitation, “The Pepper Box,” Jack Mincham; song, “Dulcie and the Moa,” infants; song, “Little Jammy,” Jessie Mincham; recitation, “My Poor Dolly,’’ Peggy Green; recitation, “When I'm a Man,” little boys; action song, “Little Mice,” infants; dialogue, “Choosing a Name for Dolly,” Trixie Brbich and Jessie Mincham; action song, “The Elephant,” infants; “The Health Alphabet.” Interval. Piano solo (with banjo accompaniment), Irene Goodwin; “Dance of Fairies,” little girls; recitation. “Boy and .Sparrow,” Rose Green; “Canoe Song,” Arthur Green and Leslie Hoskin; song, “Podgy Wodgy,” Buddy Jones; duet, “'S’cuse me Teacher,” Madge Biscoe and. Doris Raven and chorus; dancing steps; song, “Old Man Care,” Marjorie Raven and Girlie Smith; diologue, “Bashful Mr. Flutter”; “God Save the King.” All the items were thoroughly enjoyed by the audience, many receiving encores, but owing to the large programme were not allowed. Special mention should be made of the two little girls, Jessie Mincham and Buddy Jones, who fairly brought, the house down with their respective items. The dresses, which were made by the assistant, teacher. Miss Schieb, were exceptionally pretty. The prize-giving then took place, Mr. O’Callaghan presenting the prizes to the following pupils: Standard 6: Irene Goodwin 1. Standard 5: Leslie Hoskin ], Madge Biscoe 2. Girlie Smith 3.
