Orders for papers may also be left with him. THE MARDI GRAS. FINANCIAL RESULT. December 20. The Mardi Gras balance sheet was presented to a public meeting to-night, .It showed that a total of £1404 9s was raised, but the expenses reduced the amount to £545 Is Id. The expenses included £97 13s 2d, which had been drawn by the organiser (Mr. John Hopkins), and this amount only was granted to him. The secretary (Mr. H. Bnrmester; was voted £2O and the treasurer (Mr. P. Skoglund) £lO 10s. THE PRIMARY SCHOOL. PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. The elder pupils of the Stratford Primary School gathered at the Stratford Town Hall this afternoon for the annual prize-giving ceremony. Mr. J. W. Boon (chairman of the school committee) presided, and with him on the stage were the Mayor, Mr. R. Masters, M.P., Mr. L. J. Furrie (headmaster), Mr. J. H. Thompson, the teaching staff and several ladies. Mr. Boon, on behalf of the committee, complimented the headmaster and staff on a very successful year’s work, and thanked the teachers for the organisations they were responsible for, especially mentioning the swimming classes. He commended the kindly tone of the school, which brought out the best in the children without forcing. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan), in presenting the prizes to the senior classes, congratulated the winners and those who did not win prizes, the latter because in striving to win they had improved themselves. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., who presented the prizes to the lower standards, congratulated those who had won prizes. Mr. Furrie and the staff were to be congratulated for their work during the last year. The children were most fortunate to have such a teaching staff. He wished to especially mention Miss Papps, the headmistress of the infants’ department, and her assistants. These teachers laid the foundation of the school. At the conclusion hearty cheers were* given for the headmaster, the teachers, Mr. Masters, Mr. Boon and the Mayor. A certificate, awarded by the Taranaki Education Board as a recognition of her remarkable record in not missing a single attendance in eight years, was piesented to Grace Huston. A large number of other attendance certificates were presented and also a number of prize tickets won at the Stratford and Palmerston North and Wharehuia shows. THE PRIZE LIST.
