BRITAIN TO AUSTRALIA. A DIRECT SERVICE. USE OF THE TELEPHONE. By Telegraph.—Press Ansa.—Copyright. Received Dec. 20, 5.5 p.m. London, Dec. 19. Mr. Fisk read a paper at the Colonial Institute on a wireless service between Australia and Britain. He said the need for an efficient wireless service and a progressive development policy was keenly felt and widely recognised in the Commonwealth. “If Australia’s strategical position in the Pacific, in the event of war, is to be fully realised, we must develop and apply wireless communication,” proceeded Mr. Fisk. “Australia’s wireless scheme fully meets the situation, but the question of direct communication rests upon the Imperial Government erecting corresponding stations in Britain.” Experience between Britain and Australia during the last five years afforded sufficient data to accurately specify the power and equipment necessary for such a service. It was now quite practicable to maintain direct communication between England and Australia throughout the 24 hours daily. Mr. Fisk outlined the Amalgamated Wireless Co.’s schemes and predicted experimental wireless telephony between Britain and Australia within three years. A sweeping reduction in the cost of transmission would have a far-reaching effect politically, commercially and socially. Sir Joseph Cook, proposing a vote of thanks, recalled the fact that the chairman (Mr. Cockburn) and himself were both State Postmasters-General when the Pacific cable was mooted, and he pointed out that local apathy and general opposition, even from their own technical advisers, had encountered. He hoped, as in the case of the Pacific cable, direct Australian wireless communication would soon break down all obstacles in opposition and become an established fact.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
