MANAWATU SCRATCHINGS. Palmerston N., Dec. 20. Scratchings for the Manawatu race meeting are as follow: For the Cup. Ncato: for the Stakes, Bonnie Lady, Tatau Tatau, Fabrinade. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) Marton acceptances .close on Friday/ Dissertation Is on the up-grade again. • Look out for Atapo at Awapuni next week. Royal Star and Foo Chow reached Ellerslie on Wednesday. Gave Rock jumps well, and will "do” the West Coast meetings during the holidays. Probably Mr. Riddlford will start both Royal Box and Scion in the Auckland Cup, in which case the riders will be A, Reed and M. MeCarten respectively. The Gisborne horses Scotch Mixture, Goldscene, Silver Stride and Mark Over have reached Awapuni. Admiral Codrington, Correspondent and Communicate are expected towards the and of the week. Laughing Stock, the appropriately-named son of Absurd and Commerce, opened his winning account at Te Awamutu, and judging by his attractive display should show up at Ellerslie next week. Force of habit leads some people to do queer things! Amongst a batch of greeting wires, cards, etc., received by the writer this week was one from an alleged "woolbroker,” wishing this scribe "good luck In 1923.” T wonder if my friend really meant the good hick part of it.. I'll remind him of his good wishes If I strike him for a century next year. Hughie Cairns, who is engaged to ride Insurrection and other horses at. Ellerslie next week, has arrived in New Zealand. His relatives. I believe, live in Feilding, and they, and many of his old New Zealand friends, will be pleased to meet him again after a long absence from his native land. Cairns has done well in 'Stralia. where there is bigger money for a successful horseman, especially one who is equally proficient on the flat and over hurdles. Latest advices from Palmerston are to the effect that Marquetcur and Merry Day share popularity for the Manawatu Cud, with Admiral Codrington, Sunart and Bonnie Heather fancied next. Ambitious and Chimera are in most demand for the Fitzherbert Handicap, but Irapuka and Passionless also have good followings. Royal Box is now mentioned for the Auckland Cup. with Royal Star and Tnsurroetion next fancied, followed by Winning Hit. Fon Chow, Scion, King’s Trumpeter and Boomerday. Quite decent prices are on offer about Income and Muraahi. and Stork and Poteen are the outsiders of the field. In tho Railway Handicap punters appear to prefer the chances of Epitanh, Glentruin, The Hawk. Pavo and Lady Ridicule. In ’Stralia recently several horses directly or indirectly connected with New Tealand have won races. Arch Margot (Marble Arch —-Gwenlad), a sister to Gwenet., won the Flying at Rosebery, and returned a tall price. At Moorefield the ex-New Zealander, E. J. Wat.t. won the Jumpers’ Flat with All Aboard (All Black—Float), and tho Three-Year-old Handicap with El Dorado (All Black—Auraria’s Daughter), while Rose Water (Carl Rosa— Tangiwai) landed a big stake for her party in the Kogarah Stakes. Later on Nola (Thurnham—Flagship) won a race at Rosebery. New Zealand-bred sires represented by winners include Reputation (Repenell.e and Infamous), Achilles (Waitea), and Beau Soult (Beauplay and Beau Bee). Englefield, who won the I Epsom Cup, was got by George Frederick (a son of Carbine), from Advantage (Advance — Lady Spec). Died in Melbourne, recently, J. J. Miller, at various times (and in various places) goldfossiker, publican, bookie, horse-owner, printer, sweep-promoter, and councillor, and at all times a rattling good sport. "J.J.” was the originator of sweeps in 'Stralia. and at one time had eleven fully paid up "consultations” on tho Melbourne Cup alone. That was before the law stepped in. Then Tattersalls took it up. "Miller’s Guide.” a half-yearly volume of racing results and statistics, was one o' his many racing publications. In spite of a strenuous life "J.J.” lived to 91, and he left quite a lot of wealth. Next, week New Zealand will break out like ,i small boy with tho measles, only instead of "snots” there will be race meetings. From Boxing Day to January 3, inclusive, there will he thirty-one days’ racing in various parts of tho Dominion ! The New Zealand-bred mare Truthful (by Demosthenes—Lily White), whp was sold for I.3oogns in September last in Sydney, when Mr. W. G. Stead’s horses went to auction, has so far failed to justify her purchase. Tn the decision of the Epsom Cup on November 25 Truthful (7.11) managed to get up into third place, and the £25 attaching to her position in the race named is her sole contribution to the Victorian sportsman, Mr. C. Meyers, who bought her at 1900gns. Apropos the tinkering with the betting laws in England, "Field Steward” writes as follows :—I am reminded of the old story of the small jumping meeting in the West of England, where a little gang of amateurs (?) got. very busy. It was the day when paying "first past the post prevailed outside the rings—which is still often the rule with men who do not bet in the recognised enclosures at many popular courses. There were only three runners for the small hurdle race, and all three riders were in the conspiracy. All the long prices against the outsider of the party were quietly picked up by confederates, froun the outside men, and they promptly drew their ready when this outsider got home aftox jwljiftWy.bumpiaf •“d.boriaf second.
The objection which naturally followed was sustained, and then some of the others in it drew all the ready-money bets they had made in the rings on this horse, which got the race —for the time being. A third lot had backed the horse (originally finishing last) on credit accounts, and, within the necessary period an objection was laid on its behalf against the horse (which had been allotted the spoils) on the technical grounds owing to the entry not being in order. Before the end of the week this objection was sustained, so the gang actually clicked over three winners in turn, without losing a .penny in the process.
