SPORTING.
TURF TOPICS. / (By “Moturoa,”) Races at New Plymouth on Tuesday and Wednesday. First day’s acceptances aie fairly good all round. With a start in, Rouen would be supported in the big handicap. Whatever beats the veteran Inah in the Flying will have to “skip." Malingerer has dropped out of Awapunl engagements, so may be expected here next week. Snatcher is reported to be in great nick at present, and easy <money awaits him at Xew Plymouth. Many Kittle’s defection from the Manawatu Cup came as a surprise. Merry Day ana Marqueteur are now favored for the race. A. Oliver took Santiago to Auckland on Monday. His mounts at -Ellerslie will include Royal Star, Solfanello and Santiago. The imported horse Alfort had every chance to score at Te Awamutu on Friday, but after getting “a fly" he turned ft up badly and finished outside a place. Northerners have a heap of respect for Income In the Auckland Cup, the game son of Guianflorte having run his best races at Ellerslie and Avondale. He may not win the big race, but is sure to win a heat at the meeting. The Great Northern Foal Stakes will provide an interesting finish if Murihaupo, Queen March, Tukia and Bathos go to the post. Queen March appears to he able to run a very solid 'six,” and will take some beating. What has become of the disqualified horses Ibex and Turangapito? That is a question that is troubling many people at present. A stipe in New South Wales the other day expressed the opinion that “a ringer" known as Landrost was identical with Turangapito. But where Is Ibex? When Infante fell in the Rotorua Cup on Saturday, the rider, S. Anderson, had a foot bruised. Spills were frequent during the two days’ racing at Te Awamutu, and the stipes should seriously consider whether the course is safe for big fields. Te Kara, by General Latour—March, and therefore a half-brother to Queen March and Lucius, won the Hack Welter at Te Awa•nnitu on Saturday in taking style, and appears to be a useful sort. He was a long way back in the flirly stages, but buried the opposition in the run home. Epitaph was produced at Te Awamutu on Saturday, and despite the steadier of 9.4 was backed down to odds on. Roy Reed got her out fairly well from a wretched send-off. and at the end of a furlong she was in front. Nothing had a chance with her afterwards. Epitaph looks to have a great chance in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie on Tuesday. Boomerday repgated last year’s victory in the Te Awamutu Cup, which he again won from end to end, and the next day he scored as easily in the Rotorua Cup. Although not quite in the top hole division, Boomerday is useful, and may be heard of during the course of the Auckland meeting. Owing to trouble with his feet, Gasbag will not be a runner at Ellerslie next week. He is at present spelling at his owner's place at Ngatarawa. Many people are not satisfied that Enthusiasm Is better than King’s Trumpeter over a. mile and a half, and they’ will be given another opportunity to decide the vexed question when the pair meet In the Great Northern Derby at Ellerslie next week. Refinement, Highland and Rua pa pa will also bo included in the field, and the contest promises to be a most interesting one. The ex-New Zealand “flier," Mermin, having failed to make good in 'Stralia, will shortly he shipped to India. Refrigeration shaped like a good one at Fellding, and should be worth following at the Walrarapa meeting at New Year. Sid. Reid has Danger Zone at Ellerslie, looking very fit for next week’s engagements, too I Sir Samuel Hordcn has decided to retire the imported Violoncello to the stud. The hero of recent w.f.a. races at Caulfield and Flemington Is a fine, masculine looking horse, and should command liberal patronage. Melbourne scribes are unanimous in declaring Rational’s brother, The Monk,' to he a great horse. At Flemington he made no race of more seasoned horses in the Fleming Stakes, and on the concluding day of the Cup meeting repeated the dose in convincing fashion.
