THE WOOL MARKET.
HIGH PRICES CONTINUE. NEW RECORD ESTABLISHED. ANIMATED SALE AT DUNEDIN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The first wool sale of the season in Dunedin was held to-day, when 10,000 bales were offered to a full bench of buyers. Limits were very elastic, many lots being started at from 4d to 7d under the price at which they were eventually knocked down. One of the special features of the sale was excited competition for finer crossbred wools. The price paid for this class was higher than at any previous auction held this season, and possibly higher than the price paid at any auction ever held in the Dominion. Many of the buyers freely admitted that the prices given were often 3d to 4d a pound above what they themselves were prepared to pay. Local mills were again eager buyers for merinos and best halfbreds, as weli as for good quality bellies and pieces. Canadian and American buyers competed strongly for strong wools of 46’s quality and upwards, while Bradford and the Continent took practically everything else. Practically everything submitted was sold. Records for this market were established by “Puketoi” merino, which touched 28£d, while many lots of halfbreds and Corriedale made 23id to 241 d. It was the opinion of those who watch wool values closely that merinos and halfbreds were on a par with Christchurch, but that three-quarterbred and crossbreds showed an appreciation on that sale. Prices: Merinos 20d to Corriedale 16d to 24d, fine halfbred 15d to 24}d. medium halfbred 15d to 24d, coarser halfbred 12y t d to 21 d, fine crossbred 9Jd to 17d. medium crossbred BAd to 14d, coarse crossbred 7y 2 d to 12d.
