FIRES.
FIRE AT OKOTUKU. A fire occurred at the Okaaiku junction on Tuesday, resulting in the complete demolition of a five-roomed house occupied by Mr. G. W. McLeod and family, and owned by Mr. Newland, of Waverley. It appears that the .’amiiy left the house at about 5 p.m., and on getting some distance away saw smoke coming from the house, and on returning found one of the rooms to be on fire. By dint of hard wotk tney succeeded in beating out the flames, and. again left the hou*e, but on returning about an hour and a half later found nothing but the chimney standing, the house and contents being completely destroyed. Mr. and Mrs. Nicholson and family lost everything but the clothes they stood up in. The fire, it is stated, was caused in the first place by the overturning of a small stove, which wa* used for cooking purposes.—Press.
