BUSINESS MEN’S TRIBUTE.
The sympathy of the business community with Mr. Stratford’s relatives in their loss was expressed at the quarterly meeting of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce last night. Before the meeting was opened, Mr. T. C. List (president of the Chamber) said he thought that, as a Chamber, they should express their regret at the loss the town had suffered in the death of Mr. Stratford, whose demise was a loss not only to the Central School and the cause of education, but to the community, and, further than that, a loss to New Zealand, because he was a man of outstanding character and high principles and had radiated his influence further than the confines of his own school. Mr. Stratford’s death, Mr. List continued, was one of those things they could hardly understand, in that a man who stood so high was taken away while others who could well be spared were left. He proposed a vote of condolence to Mr. Stratford’s relatives, which was carried by those present standing in silence.
