CO-OPERATION IN TRADE.
Co-operation is a vital force that has enabled a few farmers in the Taranaki district to form and foster the development of. a large commercial organisation. It is but natural that the trading vicissitudes of the post-war period have interfered with the progress of this venture. Even the largest and the oldest commercial institutions that have to buy and sell upon a falling market have had a severe struggle during the past few years. Private concerns have been compelled to draw upon the reservesaccumulated in better times. The co-operative trading institution owned by the farmers of this district, is characterised by exceptional enterprise and sound management. As- a direct result it has been able to carry on successfully through the slump years without the aid of reserves. The Farmers’ Co-operative Organisation Society of New Zealand Limited is young in years, and has had little opportunity to accumulate special reserve funds. Its- real reserve is the uncalled capital of its many shareholders, and this represents a formidable sum. The success of this great company has been due to the loyalty of its members who have been justifiably proud of their own trading organisation. Tt will not do, however, for the producers of this district to rest too serenely upon their laurels. A little inaction and lack of support at this juncture may hamper the Company, and mean the loss of many advantages gained. The business must advance or decline, and it is for the Taranaki farmers to see that substantial progress is achieved. It is in the interests of the district that every producer should be a shareholder in the Farmers’ Co-operative Organisation Society of New Zealand Limited, Hawera. Moreover, it is also important that each shareholder should give his full financial support to the movement *
