CHRISTCHURCH WOOL SALE. SHARP ADVANCE IN PRICES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The second wool sale of the season opened briskly before a full bench of buyers, representing English, Colonial, •American, and Continental houses. There was a further sharp advance In prices, merino showing a rise of from to 2d per lb.; half-bred Corriedale l%d to 2d: three-quarterbred by l%d to 2d; medium and coarse crossbred l%d; pieces, locks, bellies, and crutchings on an average by Id to 2d. The entry consisted of 18,434 bales. After seven hundred bales had been sold, the top prices were: Merino 27 1 4 d, Corriedale 26%d, halfbred 24%d, three-quar-terbred 20% d. crossbred 16d. merino pieces 22d, halfbred pieces 18%d, Corriedale pieces 22%.d, merino locks H%d, bellies 12%d, Corriedale bellies 15%d, crutchings 9*4d, down pieces 15%d. The demand for sterling rose sensationally today, reaching 463& cents, a gain of 4 5-8 cents over yesterday. Experts ascribe the increase to heavy -buying of exchange in tnis market for British interests. The appreciation is important to American importers of British goods. The tariff provides that an allowance shall be made for depreciated foreign exchange in valuing imported goods only when the depreciation amouonts to at least 5 per cent, sterling. Therefore it is now par so far as Imports are concerned. Received Dec. 14, 8.30 p.m. London, Dec. 13. The exchange on New York is 469 cents, and on Montreal 471 cents. LOCAL MARKET REPORT.
