A CHRISTMAS TOAST.

TO BROTHER ANGLERS. Brother anglers’ A Xmas toast: To Egmont, our bounteous mountain, that fills our streams with rapids, ripples and rills, with here and there a pool wherein lie lusty, vigorous trout for the greatest of pastimes —angling! Gentlemen! A foaming flagon to our lady Egmont, and no heel-taps! Another Yuletide is here, and to the angler the present season has been easily the best in the past dozen years. Every stream has yielded a plentiful supply of trout, well-grown, big-conditioned specimens. Compared with other districts, our rivers more than hold their own as fishingwaters, both because of the excellent feeding for trout and for the pretty scenery to be met with. There is hardly a river in Taranaki but what has delightful situations on its bank for pitching a summer camp. There is much (for those who spend most of their time in town) that is worth seeing amidst the grandeur of the native bush and the eternal cliffs, with their many-colored strata and age-old formation. Under such peaceful conditions the angler will enjoy to the full flyfishing in the early morning and evening. It is a subtle and delicate pursuit tending towards peace of mind and good health, and carried on amidst surroundings that make for contentment and true happiness.
