DEFIANCE OF TURKS.

PLAIN WORDS FROM ALLIES. ATTITUDE MUST CHANGE. AN ANSWER DEMANDED. By Telegraph.—Prs*» Ajsbu. —Copyright. Received Dec. 14, 7.45 p.m. Lausanne, Dec. 13. At the conference to-day, Lord Curzon Mid: “The Turkish delegation does not mm to realise the serious situation in which we are placed. We are here for one object only—our aim is to remove the barriers which stand in the way to that object. The Turks seem to raise barriers continuous!}', and it cannot continue indefinitely. We all have other things to do.’’ “If the conference breaks on the minorities question, will a single voice be raised in favor of the Turkish delegation? They may be supported in Angora, but will not be anywhere else. I have spoken clearly, and my colleagues agree. I make these observations in a feeling of friendship, and they are quite deliberate.” Lord Curzon recalled the lamentable treatment Turkey meted out to her Christian minority. It had been decided that the conference must establish their lasting security, and he begged Ismet Pasha to consider the future. France and Britain, the greatest Empires in the world, were not afraid of the control of the League of Nations, which Turkey refused. He advised Turkey to apply for admission to the League and abandon her defiant attitude. Ismet Pasha asked for permission to reply at a further sitting. Lord Curzon replied that sittings could not be held indefinitely. The Allies would leave Lausanne sooner than the Turks imagined, if Ismet continued to reply with commonplaces. A meeting of the commission is summoned for to-morrow, when the Turks will have an opportunity to reply.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
