CLERK OF COURT GUILTY. By Telegraph.—Prew Association. Hamilton, Last Night. At the Supreme Court, to-day, Henry Thomas Smith,, late constable and clerk of the court at Kawhia, was charged with having committed 12 thefts, nine of them being in respect of moneys paid into court, and three others in regard to the alleged disappearance of various articles from thKawhia wharf. Smith was indicted before a jury of 12 to answer two of the charges and the other cases will be taken later in batches of two or three. Evidence was given that money was paid to accused, but was not acknowledged. After a retirement, of half an hour the jury returned with a verdict of guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy on account of the laxity of the audit and the stigma cast on prisoner’s family. Sentence was deferred.
