A Sydney cablegram says Aiderman Gilpen has been elected Lord Mayor of Sydney. A section of the civic Reform Party, voting with the Labor Party, defeated Mr. McElhone by two votes. Mr. H. A. Stratford, headmaster of the Central School, New Plymouth, was removed to hospital on Saturday night suffering from an acute attack of appendicitis, necessitating an operation. The death of Mr. Clenjent L. Wragge, at the age of 70, is announced in a message from Auckland. He had a paralytic seizure about a fortnight ago while' on a lecturing tour. He had resided at Birkenhead for the last twelve years. He was born at Stourbridge. England, and he founded the Ben Nevis observatory. Then he joined the South Australian' Survey Department and later became Government meteorologist for Queensland and afterwards founded the Mount Kosciusko observatory in New South Wales. He leaves a widow and one son.
