WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspoodent.) The Waitara State School Committee held its usual monthly meeting on Monday evening last. The headmaster's report showed the number on the roll as 375, the highest attendance during the month being 3'65 and the average attendance 352. The matter of a caretaker for the school swimming hath during the summer vacation was left in the chairman’s hands to arrange. Final arrangements were made for the annual school concert. The general opinion of the committee in regard to the repeated request for larger accommodation was that the department were not caring two straws, and the following resolution was passed: “That this committee regrets that the department has seen fit to pass over the recommendations of the board in respect to the order of grants for school, buildings, and as the matter of more accommodation at Waitara is most urgent, the committee request that the injustice of keeping back the grant be immediately remedied.” A copy was forwarded to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Education. A reply has since been received from the Prime Minister stating that he Is placing the matter before the Minister of Education, and as soon as the election is over the matter will be fully gone into. The town on Wednesday was en fete with Maoris. “The election was on," and the principal korero was who was going to win. The town itself also presents an a la Maori appearance, being all dressed up with ferns, the occasion being Waitara’s great shopping week. The business people speak highly of the business being transacted, although personally speaking I think they have chosen the wrong week. On Friday evening Waitara’s band will parade the streets and liven proceedings, and i* is hoped the public will roll up to listen to them.

The shops observed their half-holiday on Thursday this week on account of the election, and will be open ail day on Saturday.
