LAND ARMAMENTS.
REDUCTION IN EUROPE. AMERICA'S PLANS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. ■Received Dec. 7, 9.35 p.m. New’ York, Dec. 6. The New York Times’ Washington correspondent says that President Administration hopes ultimately to succeed in interesting European nations in a proposal for the world reduction of land armaments, the first step of which is seen in the Central American Conference, which is now extended to all South America. The announcement was. made that the Pan-American Conference at Santiago next March will have as the chief item on the agenda the reduction of naval and military armaments. The Administration hopes for the success of both conferences, thus setting an example to the rest of the world, while it .believes until Europe balances its budget by reducing the cost of huge military establishments economic stability is impossible. It is interesting to note that the Uruguayan proposal.to form an American League of Nations, comprising the United States and Latin America, was amended by Mr. Hughes to read, ‘‘PanAmerican.” The Conference should consider measures for the closer association of the republics in the American I continent with a view to promoting their common interests. —Aus.-N.Z.
