WEST END SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The West End School Committee met on Monday night. Present: Messrs. Jas. Garcia (chairman). J. Lobb, A. Coad. J. Hoskin, J. Brokcnshire, J. Hawker, A. G. Carr, W. Doull, W. H. Broome (secretary) and D. P. Evans (headmaster). Arrangements were made in connection with the forthcoming gala. Messrs. Mynott, Anthony and Harper (teachers) and Mosers. V. ’H. Beal, T. Petty, and Trueman (members of the Kawaroa Park Committee) conferred with the committee on the matter. It was stated that owing to the elections on Thursday necessitating a half holiday, the shops would not be closing on Saturday, December 0, the date fixed for the gala, and it was decided to postpone the gala day until the following Saturday, December 16. The various sub-comirfittees submitted reports showing that arrangements were well in hand. The children were entering very keenly into the various edmpetitions, the cooking competition in particular attracting numerous entries. Ine response for sugar for sweets had been remarkably. good, over two bags having been brought by the children. Three cakes had 'been given for competition. the donors being Miss Mynott, Messrs. G. H. Gallagher (Fitzroy) and Finlay. Judges were appointed for the various competitions, whilst arrange ments were made for the various sports, displays, etc., as well as the numerous stalls and side shows.

The School Committee then met, when the headmater reported that for the five weeks ending December 1 nine children had been admitted and eight had been withdrawn, leaving a roll number of 640. The average, attendance had been 581.5. The average weekly roll had been 639.8, the percentage of average attendance being 90.9. This was somewhat low, but there had been a good deal of sickness. The results of the sixth standard examination had come to hand, showing that of the 59 pupils 58 had obtained proficiency certificates and one a competency certificate. The boys had again won the primary schools cricket competition, not having been beaten. It was resolved to pass a vote of appreciation of the splendid work done at the proficiency examination, and this will be conveyed to the headmaster and to the teacher of the class (Mr. Rowntree). The team and their coach (Mr. Rountree) were also congratulated on their success.

The headmaster reported that Mr. Abram had donated 100 photo mounts to the school. A vote of thanks was accorded to the donor. 'Misses Anthony and Sharpe notified that they were resigning their positions as assistants at the school a.s rem January 31. —Accepted with regret. It was decided to have the prefcpnta tion of the prizes for the senior scholars at the Empire Theatre bn Monday, December 18, at 2.30 p.m., and for the. infants at the school on the same morning at 11 o’clock. It was decided to hold the annual picnic early in February. Mr. Hoskin reported that there would be a profit of over £6 in connection with the recent entertainment in the Workers’ Social Hall. Members considered this very satisfactory, and a vote of appreciation of Mr. Hoskin's work was passed.
