The visitor who goes to Flemington early, and is lucky enough to get a good seat, in one of the many stands, usually lias lots of fun watching the freak costumes that, have been worn with great enthusiasm in past years. They were but few this year. Either their wearers were frightened by the weather, and did not care to risk their well-thought-out costumes, or the day of the freak costume is gone for ever (says the Sydney Telegraph). The few that appeared were the subject of much attention. One lady went right back to the Early Victorian days, and, notwithstanding the present clinging skirt fashion, her skirt was as wide as a crinoline; it was of black and white stripes. She. wore the most remarkable hat seen for years, but she was the exception. Once more mere war, great scope for the smart coat, and hundreds of beautiful fur coats were to be seen.
