CARRINGTON ROAD.
SCHOOL PRIZE-GIVING. The fancy dress ball and annual prizegiving ceremony in connection with the Carrington Road school was held on Thursday night when, despite the rain, there was a large attendance of children and adults. Tlia gathering also marked the official opening of the school after its renovation and the relaying-ont of the grounds. During the evening several dances were given by the children under the direction of Mr. Turner (headmaster). The fancy dresses were judged by Mr. A. R. Davis, who made the following awards: Girls, Miss' A. Cornwall (Samoan sacred maiden). Boys-: Master Roy King (Teddy hear). Others in fancy dress were: Girls. Misses J. Adlam (Queen of Hearts), r. .Jury (French lady). E. Adlam (Cinderella), S. Cornwall (Japanese), J. Harrison (Orange and Lemons), A. Smith (fuchsia), A. Adlam (Moonlight), P. Ballantyne (Maori). F. Lehmann (Weldon’s Fashions), P. IValdoek (Topsy), S. Ballantvne (Cipsy). J. Cole (Summer), N. Gilbert (Dutch girl), L. King (Daffodil). 0. Okov (Red Riding Hood), V. Lehmann (Union Jack), M. King (Daffodil), K. Blanco (Snowdrop), W. Pepperell (Rose), M. Turner (Autumn Leaves), I. Turner (Christmas Eve), J. Davidson (Sunflower), H. Brown (Gipsy), J. Blane.e (Red Cross Nurse). N. Holmes (Cigarettes), F. Soffe (Folly), D. Whittle (Sp : der 'Web). E. Baker (Baggy Breeches). M. Richards (Pansy), IT, Wadsworth (Ivy), L. Smith. 1.. Bratt, and S. Bond (Pierrettes). M. Hawkes (Alsatian Peasant), P. Baker (Goblin), and D. Rond (Sweet Simplicity); Messrs. Rooke (Ned Kelly), M. O’Dowda. (.Joe Flannelf.itot), R. Weston (Johnny Walker), I. Purcivill (Sundowner), B. Brown (Pierrot), and H. Brown (King Cole). The prizes wert» then presented by Mr. R. J. Deare (member of the Taranaki Education Board). Each child in the school received a prize. Others were awarded as follows: First, Standard 3. —Alice Adlam. First, Standard 4. — Agnes Smith. First, Standard s.—Al wine Cornwall. Dux of the school (1922). —Gold modal, Pearle Jury. Proficiency (1922) silver medals-: Jessie Adlam, Pearle Jury, and . Ken. Harrison. Dux of School (1921). —Gold medal presented By headmaster (Mr. Turner): ; Mary Smith. Proficiency: Mary Smith, 1 A. Jackson, R. Grooby. Best reader in class (prizes given -by Mr. Griffin and Mr. Turner). —Alwine 1 Cornwall and Pearle Jury.
Most popular boy and girl (prize given by the chairman, Mr. M'Ewen), awarded by vote.—'Girl: Pearle Jury. Boy: Ken. Harrison. Full attendance (3 years).—Lorna King. Monitors’ prize —Jessie Adlam and Harold Card. At the conclusion Mr. Deare wished the children a merry Christmas and asked the chairman to grant them a holiday on the next day. The scholars then made a presentation to Miss Hawkes, the assistant, t as a token of the esteem in which she was held by her pupils, whilst Mr. j Turner was the recipient of a hand- i some initialled wallet from the senior and old pupils and the school. Both teachers suitably acknowledged the gifts. Supper was afterwards served aUd dancing was again continued till a late Jjpur.
