DISTRICT NEWS.
OAKURA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) During last week we had the pleasure of hearing both Parliamentary candidates, and of getting an insight into their views for and against the Government. At both meetings the audiences were large and very attentive, and at the conclusion the usual questions, some wise and some otherwise, were asked | and answered. The former were ex- ' plained beyond a doubt, and the latter ■ were quashed in a similar manner. Each 1 candidate was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence. Whilst Mr. Bellringer was speaking a. eat—not a black one—walked around the hall, even venturing on to the plat- , form and under the speaker’s chair. I In the course of his speech, Mr. Bellringer described as ridiculous and amusing his opponent’s proposed housing scheme, and again endeavored to confirm the allegation that Mr. .Smith had on 63 occasions voted with Mr. Holland in spite of the oft-repeated denial made by the member for Taranaki. Mr. Bellringer also argued that the present financial condition of the country instead of being at fault, as Mr. Smith alleges it to be, is a credit to Mr. Massey, when one considers the fact that the country has only just passed through so great a crisis as the Great War. When questioned as to what action he would take if Mr. Holland were to bring in a bill to confer any benefit on the country. Mr. Smith declared that he would feel compelled to cast his vote (on the side of the Labor Party, whereas the Reform candidate most emphatically denied that Mr. Holland could bring in such a Bill. At the conclusion of Mr. Bellringer’s speech- the chairman advised his audience to carefully weigh the arguments of the respective candidates, and to record their votes in favor of the one who, in their opinion, would do the most good for their country.
