MORE SETTLERS.
CANADA’S OPEN DOOR. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Ottawa, November 28. The Minister of the Interior, Mr. Stewart, speaking at the Canadian Club, at Montreal, made an important announcement regarding the Government’s impending immigration plans and asked the support of financial interests for these proposals. He said the first step would be to comb the western part of the United States, with an intensive advertising campaign to attract tenant farmers, who are now paying rent seven times greater than they would pay in Canada. Second, a publicity campaign would be conducted in Britain and certain countries of Northern Europe, whose nationals it was considered would make excellent immigrants. An effort would bp made to secure farmers with funds, but tenant, farmers would also be encouraged to come. Large Canadian land-owners in the west would be asked to release part of their holdings for tilling on the tenant co-operation basis. Mr. Stewart did not mention the question of granting credits to prospective settlers.
