PACIFIC MANDATES.
THE CONTROL OF NAURU. CHARGES ANSWERED. By Telegraph —Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov. 28, 8.45 p.m. London, Nov. 27. The High Commissioner for Australia (Sir Joseph Cook), replying to Press attacks on the methods of carrying out the Pacific mandates, writes that they merely re-hash old criticisms which he has already answered. He points out that nearly 18 per cent, of Nauru’s output is sold outside Britain, Australia and New Zealand, whose Governments did not derive profit from working the phosphate deposits. The scream for equal trading rights comes principally from great world monopolies. With reference to labor, Sir Joseph Cook points out that it is necessary because native labor is not obtainable. The Press allegation that the Nauru mandate results in the subordination of the education, health and justice of the natives to the purpose of winning phosphates, Sir Joseph Cook declares is simply untrue.—Aus.-N.Z.
