BOXING.
THURSDAY’S BIG CONTEST. Judging by the Interest displayed througuout the province in the tournament which Is being held at the Coronation Hail, New Plymouth, on Thursday evening, the enterprise of the Taranaki Boxing Association In staging a match between two such top-notchers as Cyril Whitaker and Les. Gleeson will be rewarded by a bumper house, as it deserves to be. Billy Crawford, the well-known boxing Instructor, who manages Cyril Whitaker, the crack heavyweight now matched with Les. Gleeson, Is a much-travelled man. He has made the trip to England several times witn boxers, and also trained fighters in every Australian State. He has seen Les. Gleeson box on different occasions, and remarked on one fight in particular, which took place a.t the Newtown Tramway Pastime Club, Sydney, In which Gleeson boxed Battling Jack Taylor. “The fight,” said Crawford, “was one of the toughest I ever saw, Gleeson finally winning on a foul about the fifteenth round if memory serves. Jack Taylor was a. real roughhouse fighter, and when he found Gleeson outpointing him, resorted to every dirty trick in the game, finally throwing Gleeson, who thereby won on a foul.” This match on Thursday evening should provide a great contest, as Cyril Whitaker is known loeally as a clean and clever boxer. The following amateurs have been matched: Bantam-weight.—Marshall v. Walker (both High School boys). Light-weight.—Fleteher (Tarata) v. Coates (Omata). Heavy-weight.—Mills (Riverlea) v. Tuku ?• (Okato). Light-weight.—Parker (Wellington) v. Cuaoy (Waitara). Fly-weight,—-Barlow v. Field (both High School boys).
