SLUMP IN COTTON TRADE.
DISTRESS AMONGST WORKERS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov. 23, 12.50 a.m. London, Nov. 21. The Lancashire cotton trade is experiencing the worst time for 40 years. It is proposed to further shorten working hours to three days weekly throughout the American section, constituting 70 per cent, of the spinners and affecting 129,000 workers. Distress among operatives is acute. The unions’ funds are depleted; many had to reduce and some stop benefits. Since January 1, in Britain the wages of seven to twelve million workers have been reduced to the extent of £4,250,000 weekly, while 75,000 had increases totalling £115,000 weekly.—Aus.-N.Z.
