CONDUCT OF INDIAN MEETINGS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, Nov. 20. Mr. Theodore Marks, of Robertson and Marks, architects, has returned from India, where he has been reconstructing the Western Indian Turf Club’s racecourse at Bombay awd Poona at a cost of half ft million. He says no bookmakers are allowed on either course, only the totalisator. He states that the horses arc prcunenaded in single file in the order of their numbers on the race card, that every visitor may get an opportunity of well judging each competitor prior to each

TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Ashhurst races on Wednesday. South Canterbury on Friday and Saturday. The Takapuna spriir: meeting opens on Saturday. Kail should be worth watelling at Ashhurst. The sprinter Gallia is now located in Greymouth. Tick off Merry Day to win a good ten furlongs race shortly. Creme de Menthe has been retired to the stud, and visits Lucullys this season. Insurrection Is going well at Trentham, and will be in the market for the Auckland Cup. In ten starts at Hamilton the apprentice rider E. A. Keesing Steered five firsts and a second. A northern scribe states that the Hamilton Club’s track and appointments are the worst of any two-daj’ club in the North Island. Toto investments on the New Zealand Cup totalled £16,249, but our trotting friends went one better In the Trotting Cup with £17,402. Ruapapa, a chestnut colt by Polydamon— Queen Elizabeth, won the Threc-year-old iMalden Handicap at Moorefield on the 4th Inst. Radiant Light was a runner In the Cantala Stakes, one mile, at Flemington, and finished sixth. Molyneaux was also unplaced, but the rank outsider, Fingon (Finland —Warscare), beat all but the crack Violoncello. Mr. A. Chisholm secured a bargain when he got Glcntruin for 65 guineas In England in 1919. The mare has started in 18 races in New Zealand, winning 11, being second in 4, and third In- 3—not once unplaced. Stakes won £3602 10s. Sunflower IL, the sire of Glentruin, was drowned when a steamer carrying him to America was torpedoed by the Hun, According to a Sydney paper Mr. R. Skelton, who now races Tommy Rot, has another Maorllander in his stable in the shape of the 14.2 pony Pakeha, by Rokeby—Bella Donna. Apparently Pakeha Is Identical with the pony which raced In the Dominion as Pahaka, and won races in Greymouth and Blenheim when carrying Mr. J. J. Corry’s colors. The veteran horseman, "Bobby” Lewis, made his twent-.-sixth appearance in the Melbourne Cup race' recently. He won .the race on The Victory, Patrobas, and Artilleryman, and scored seconds on Malster, Alawa, and Shepherd King. Bea uf ord’s daun, Blueford, recently foaled a colt to Beau Soult, the youngster therefore being a full-brother to the Aussie champion. Blueford visits Beau Soult again this season. The progeny of Bright Steel finished first . and Moond in the Oaks al rjaataften, Soar-

let leading Steel and Gold at the finish. Further coincidences at the meeting were noticeable when the nautical Sinbad the Sailor iea King of the Sea home In the Veteran Stakes, and "royalty" in the shape of Prince Tressftdy, Anton King, and Klngsfleld, filled the places In the Batman Stakes. An Auckland writer reports the death of Mr. Wllliain Nicholson, one-time member of the firm of Mcßae and Nicholson, of Hawera and Pa tea. In the early days of racing in New Zealand the late Mr. Nicholson was an accomplished amateur horseman and a popular sportsman. He rode in the Grand National and other jumping races, and in partnership with his brothers and others was at various times associated with Rustic, Butcher Boy, Gazelle, and other good horses. Another well known sport to cross the Great Divide In Auckland recently was Mr. Charles S. Lever, for many years a leading light in the Avondale Jockey Club. The writer, when' a college lad in Wellington in the 90’s, knew Charlie principally ns a rep. cricketer. Despite his bulk (he touched 20 stone when in condition), Charlie was a rattling good man with the willow, but rather clumsy in the field. The lads all knew him ns "Fatty,” and we were hot the only ones who secured amusement out of the leviathan. One can never forget the roars of laughter which shook the Basin Reserve when the Aussie cricketers, Darling and Sid. Gregory, tapped tempting little catches at the feet of Charlie, whose efforts io secure the ball on the full more than once-resulted in him landing on the grass on the broad of his back.
