’MEEWG OF THE COUNCIL. ““ THE MONTHS OPERATIONS. The monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council was held on Saturday. Present: Crs. E. Walter (chairman), S. Pitt, M. Davies, J. Jacobsen, W. H. Were, J. T. Belcher, J. O’Neill, J. H. Thomas and T. R. Anderson. The engineer, Mr. J. W. Spence, reported for the .month as follows: North Riding (East). —During the month the Makara Road-, from its junction with the Stanley Road to Mr. Forbes’ property, has 'been crowned up and water-tabled, and two sets of nineinch concrete pipes have been put in, in order to keep the water off this road. Five more Sets will be necessary. The metalling of the approaches to the Esk i Road bridge has been completed, and al! the available metal used in connecting with the Flint Road corner. When possible, stone is being taken out of the Mangamri stream and dumped on the depot crushing site. Genera] maintenance work has been carried out on the various roads’. North Riding (West). —The work of scarifying, crowning up and rolling the Denbigh Road between the Mountain Road and the second bridge has been completed. The Gentle Annie bridge has been opened for traffic. The elay fill- ■ ings forming the approaches 'have been I put in and metalled. It will be necesI sary to put further quantities of metal I on parts when the fillings have consoff- | dated. Banking and water-tabling has | been done on the Mountain Road, clay 3 binding on the Lower Pembroke Road. 3 and water-tabling and patching on the [ Monmouth Road. South Riding.—A further length of d about 60 chains of the Upper Bird Road 1 has been scarified, crowned up and rolled. A considerable amount of material has been placed on the sides pf the Mountain Road for banking up when this road is re-faced. The crusher has been set on the Finnerty Road ready for I crushing metal for the Mountain, Cheal | and Finnerty Roads. This work will be put in hand when the weather is suitI able. The second crusher is set on the I Waihapa Road, and a start made with I the re-facing of this road. Very slow I progress has been made owing io the | broken weather. Fourteen nine-inch I pipes have been placed on the Mountain . Road near the Bird Boad corner.
East Riding (Toko). —General maintenance work has been carried out on the Ohura and Ahuroa Bonds. A considerable amount, of tar patching was necessary on the Ohura Road. The northern side of the road on Sangsfer’s Hill has been filled up, and will be formed into a side frack when the fillings -hasp a chance to consolidate. The bridge on the Wftiwiri Road, near the Toko School, has been repaircel, new stringers and decking have been used, the balance of the timber, bed-logs and hand-railing being in good order. East Riding (Douglas).—The Ohura, Mangaphu a’<?d Mangaotuku Roads have received attention in the way of patching and water-tabling. On the former load four sets of concrete pipes have been put in. A start was made with the tar painting near Douglas, but this work had to be put off owing to the weather. East Piding (Huiroa). —The drag log has been run over the Akama, TTohakau and Douglas North Roads, and watertabling and crowning up has also been cone on the latter roads. Similar work has been carried out on the Autawa Roaff. Metal-banking, patching and wafer-tabling has been dnne on the Makuri Road. This road, between the Waiwiri Road and the creamery, lias suffered considerably during the last few, weeks' rain. tVest Riding.—About 235 yards of 1 sand and fine shingle have been carted i from the Kapuni stream through Mr. 1 Schicker’s property and dumped on the Palmer Road. A start has been made with the erection of the .concrete bridge over the Konini stream, Cardiff Road. Mr. Marchant has kindly consented to allow anyone, who finds it necessary, to use the ford on his property. It was found necessary to grade the approaches to enable horse-drawn v. hicles to ford the stream. General surface work has been done on the Opunake Nos. 1. *2 1 and 3, Climio. Palmer, Duthie, Ronald and Rowan Roads. Very considerable repairs are being carried out, on the Lower Hastings Road, which in parts has completely given out. Similar work ' will be necessary on the Upper WaingoTigora. Throughout the country the past j four weeks’ weather has been respon- ., silble for more road damage than oecur- | red durins’ the whole winter.
Mangaehu Riding.—The greater part of tlie month has been occupied in procuring shell-rock from Messrs. Arkwright and Johnston’s property. As in tire other ridings the roads have suffered severely during the wet weather. A tart has be«n made with the clearing of c lips and general repairs on the Mount Humphries Road. Several small slips liave occurred on the other roads in the locality. .The Puniwhakau Road was blocked for two days, but is again open. HOUSING FOR PLANT. The engineer submitted plans for the erection of a shed to house the plant in Celia Street. It had been decided that it would not pay to remove the present shod. The estimated cost of the new shed was £5OB Bs, and the cost of fill ing and metalling the entrances £lo.‘ 15s, a total of £612 3s. The plans wer< adopted, the engineer being instructcf to proceed with the building at conven ient periods without interfering wit), road work. It was pointed out. that the finance ’would have to come from the general fund. SOLDIERS’ RATES. Tn reply to a request by the council, the Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote, stating that ho had no funds at his disposal from which to pay returned soldiers’ rates. He suggested that an extension of time he given to the soldiers in which to pay their rates. The chairman said the collection of soldieiw' rates was a difficult question. The roads had to be built and maintained or the properties would become valueless, 'but he was sure the council had no dcs’r? to ‘’chase’ the soldiers, many of whom were having a desperate struggle. GENERAL. J. A. Kemp, H. S. Taylor. J. Hurliman and E. A. Cave petitioned the council to roll and tar at the top end of the Duthie Road for a distance of one mile. If this was done, it was stated, it would save the cost of laying a new foundati#t-a,t no distant date.—The enginnnr was instructed to'report on the road. The inspector, in hjs monthlv report,
complained of two bad eases of trees overhanging the road, the names of E. Bonner (Skinner Road) and J. Brown (Stanley Road) being mentioned. The matter was left In the hands of the engineer. It was also reported that 26 head of cattle had been taken off the roads, and prosecutions were pending for breaches of the lighting by-laws. “We seem to have a live inspector,” said a councillor. “I believe he has even cut down overhanging trees himself.” The insnect.br of stock wrote, drawing th? council’s attention to the necessity of clearing broom from the roadway in Mid'hirst township, in the gravel pit at Mid hirst, and on an open space on the East Road.-- 'Pho matter was loft in the hands of the engineer. The SI r;ri ford Borough Council applied for the hire of a crusher to crush 309 yards of metal at Cardiff.—On the motion of Or. Pitt, it was decided hire the plant provided it was taken during the Clirlstmaß holidays. The tender of Bake and Co. for dog collars at ]/- each was accepted.
